Better then what I found out my mom has been using...
A folder that is falling apart and just had random crap written all over it, and being unable to tell which password is the up to date password.
You have no idea how much of a pain it was setting up her new PC...

To add to what everyone said so far, you can add a PIN to the end of the password that is inside your password manager.

    The actual password: z9AKAP75U2y1234
What you store in the password manager: z9AKAP75U2y

When you log in just add the PIN. This way if someone got in your password manager they wouldn't have the real password. I wouldn't do this to every password, just the one important ones.

Also, a password manager is not an all or nothing thing. If you want to leave out your banking or email passwords you can. What matters the most is that you're not reusing passwords.

I have not used any antivirus in over 10 years besides Windows Defender, and I have not had any issues in that time. Just keep your browser, system and network devices updated and you should have no problems. Meanwhile, I have friends who call me every few months asking me why they keep getting infections on their machines. An ounce of prevention...

I have no experience with Apple products, so no idea.

If your system has malware, then it's pretty much game over. No password manager or mitigation will completely protect you. Practice good cyber hygiene to avoid this in the first place.

Email for 2FA should be good enough for most people. Unless you have reason to believe that you are being specifically targeted, a physical token shouldn't be necessary.

And people like you are why I have to pay an additional "food tax" on top of sales tax, if I get fast food in the county I live in.

That tax was specifically added to pay for the public schools laptop program (in this county). It literally just says "food tax" on the receipts.

And I absolutely support getting rid of it, and the laptop program.

Edit: I should add, these school systems REFUSE to enforce their own policy of charging students after the first breakage. Every kid gets one free repair. After that, according to policy, the parents are supposed to pay for the damage, the parents even sign a thing promising to do so.

The schools refuse to deny the child a new laptop for fear of bad optics, if the parents don't pay.

Personally, I'd be fine with the help desk people at the schools hitting the children with the laptops. Not all of them, but the ones that go through 20+ in 4 years of high school, sure.

If I had been given a free laptop when I was in school, and I had purposefully broken it, my dad would have beaten my ass. (kids also break them on purpose to delay standardized yearly testing)

And I would have fucking deserved it.

Additional fact: Middle schools break more laptops than high schools, not sure why. This is based on my observation of three different major school systems.

I've been thinking what he says in the video ever since I started watching LTT promote VPN services. I've said it before that they just use fear tactics to get you to buy something you most likely don't actually need. I wish linus would be more honest about the actual use cases of VPNs.

Just a reminder that DNS over HTTPS is a thing.

For my purposes, uBlock Origin, Privacy Badger, HTTPS everywhere, and DoH are plenty.  I don't do any piracy, and privacy wise tracking cookies are more of a worry than the VPN's extra encryption and probable history collection.

most of the internet uses RSA 2048 bits for the private key. if you look at the research it shows you would need, roughly 20-million-qubit quantum computer.

the current number of qubits by google are 53. its a fair ways off from 20 million qubits.

My friend's mom keeps thinking that hackers have installed spyware on her laptop and are recording her. Every other weekend she would ask us to "wipe her system." No matter what kind of security software and reassurance we gave her, she would always dismiss it. Finally my friend got so fed up and got her mom a tablet without a webcam for internet access and disabled the WiFi on the laptop.

Her mom called next week saying that the landlord must have snuck in and installed spyware on the laptop that's now recording her and she wants us to go wipe her system... ?

Sometimes it's not the technology that's broken. ?

Showed the secretary how to print an invoice to PDF and email it today. Twice. She calls me in to ask how to scan something, I start showing but stop and ask what and why, she says to email an invoice. Both times. She's old and she can't remember so she takes notes but then later can't manage to make sense of her notes.

My Aunt keeps getting different cell phones, and tablets from different brands, and with different cloud systems because Telus keeps up-selling here these obsolete pieces of e-waste.

It's the same thing every time...
Show up against my will because someone else volunteered me, and I want to be polite. She can't remember any passwords to access anything. Sleuth through no less than 3 random notes to get the right password. Export the contacts off the old device. Import to the new device. Have to explain for 1 hour that duplicate and incompatible contacts were removed and nothing was lost. And that a literal 1500 becoming 1200 is not a big deal. Get wrangled into having to fix a WIFI printer that she or her husband broke my configurations on for the 7th time. Get wrangled into having to fix her smart TV because Youtube is slow and blurry. Have to explain for 1 hour that having the slowest internet option available and 6 devices connected constantly at all time will cause this. (She will say something like "But it can't be the internet this is a TV") Get back into my car and drive home wondering why I do this, for free no less. Long story short I refuse to do this now and if anyone tries to volunteer me I laugh and tell them good luck.

This guy has several things badly mixed up. Especially parts where he's saying Apple has crappy built products and have shit hardware. Excuse me, what? People have 5+ years old iPhones. And they run latest iOS. How many Android phones can brag with that? Hardly any. And Apple's chipset is STILL the fastest of all devices and it was released in Fall 2018. That's almost 1 year ago and newer products still hardly play catchup with it. Of course Apple also had hardware flaws or problems. Which company doesn't? I have the XR and everyone is bitching over it's "bad" screen. I had 1080p phone before. Can't tell a god damn difference. I used to be one of those specs idiots, but after seeing there is next to no difference on such tiny screens, I simply don't give a shit. If I have to look at text from 2cm distance to notice it might be slightly less sharp than on 1080p at same distance, who really gives a shit? Also Apple seems to be one of rare if not the only one to use highest grade 7000 aluminium for the phone frame. Same grade used in aviation. The rest uses softer 6000 aluminium.

I'm really disappointed in Linus for making this video.
He didn't mention that Macs disable installing software from unknown sources by default. He didn't mention other ways to stay safe like using anti-virus software and adblockers to block malvertizing. He didn't mention that Unix-like systems are designed with multi-user from the beginning and have a simpler security model that's harder to exploit. He didn't mention how the APIs used on Windows tend to be extremely insecure compared to Mac/Linux APIs (look at SMB and WannaCry for example). He didn't mention Linux as another option with even less malware. Etc... I'm not saying he had to go in depth about everything, but he is promoting the idea that the ONLY reason that Macs are safer is less marketshare. That's not true, there are more reasons than that, though that is a very big reason. For example, Linux, another Unix-like system, is a huge target since most servers and all supercomputers run Linux, but it still has very little malware.

    P.S. macOS isn't based on Unix, it's Unix-like.

Write down your master password to your password manager. Keep that in a safe or in a safety deposit box.

You could also create 4 random questions about your life and use the answers as your master password. This way you can write down the questions without the answers and keep it somewhere hidden, so if someone does find the paper they still don't know the answers.

Another option is to create a fake URL and hide it among other URL's that you print out. Kind of like hiding it in plain sight. No one expects a list of URLs to be one of your master passwords. You could also take a document you've written like an old school paper and pick a random sentence from it to be your master password. It's another way to hide your master password in plain sight without forgetting it.

As for the issue you have with keeping your passwords in one spot you could also do the 2 password managers option. You have one password manager for the super important passwords like banking or email. Then another password manager for the regular boring stuff. This way you disperse your attack surface but honestly this can be over done. One thing I like to do is have a password manager like KeePassXC to hold all my passwords and allow Chrome to store the less important ones for easier logins. If I need a new password I use KeePassXC to generate and store it and then let Chrome store it if it's not that important. This way I can keep the password manager closed when I don't need it as a password manager is only secure when its locked. My important passwords are safe and I get to keep easy access to my everyday passwords.

I know you may think you only have 20 passwords, I thought the same thing until I got a password manager and realized I had over 100 passwords. It's so easy to forget all the passwords we created in the past until one of those accounts get hacked.

While 2FA is great and secure, having a strong and unique password is more important. Just having 2FA and not a strong or unique password is making 2FA less secure and destroying its purpose. This article better describes this.

It's a scam. Your password ended up on a breach and they want to get bitcoin from you.

You can check out https://haveibeenpwned.com/ to see what breaches you're in.

If you're not using a password manager it's time to start. Check out Bitwarden, 1Password, or KeePassXC if you want a local one. You need to give every account a unique password. Also, don't forget your master password to your password manager as most password managers don't have a reset option.
