Since you just built it and there is no os, you don't need to do anything with bitlocker.
That you setup in windows to encrypt the drive.
In this case I would hit y.

m9x3mos got a reaction from Needfuldoer in Need help with router network sotrage.
For how you want to use it on local network, you want to be using SMB.
With ftp, you will always need to download the files to open them and can't open them from the server directly.
SMB will still show if you disable 1 and 2. SMB current version is 3.1.1
1 should never ever be used due to vulnerabilities and 2 is outdated.

I would check to see if any of the jonsbo n1 n2 or n3 might fit.
Silver stone has a small form factor case I think as well.
There aren't a lot of choices sadly.

While that is true, a fqdn like that is easier to remember, type, and write down.

I run a mini pc that has an n100 that runs windows as the host and virtualize truenas and pass in the drives from a 5 bay orico enclosure and that seems to work well.
If there are mini pcs that can take multiple sata that could work but I haven't seen any, hence the enclosure and the need to run it virtualize under windows to get the usb enclosure to be stable.

Correct. I use haproxy on mine and it will check requests against a text file with allowed ips and only let them through if it matches and if not it appears like nothing is there.
I used to use nginx but switched to haproxy since it can handle tcp streams not just http.

m9x3mos got a reaction from Eigenvektor in How useful is a reverse proxy?
No, both ways you only need one domain.
Without a reverse proxy your need to specify different ports which can be confusing for end users and some services might not like using non standard ports.
With a reverse proxy you can have all services using the standard ports and the sub domain specifying the different services.
Ie domain.com for a basic web site
Then nextcloud.domain.com for an installation of next cloud.

Also with a reverse proxy you can limit connection rates as well as what ip addresses.
I use mine to VPN through on port 443 and my websites can only be accessed through Cloudflare.

Asus does sell an ipmi card but does not look like it is compatible with that motherboard.
I have been using pikvm and that has been working great. You can build it on a stand along box or a form factor that will use a pcie bay in the case.
    I have this
    https://www.amazon.com/Geekworm-KVM-A3-Raspberry-Compatible-Include/dp/B0B5R37TT3/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?keywords=Pikvm&qid=1706583786&sr=8-1
With a pi 4 8gb and have had zero issues with it.
With that you can control the machine just like you were there just need to plug it into your outputs.

Look up either pfsense or opnsense.
Both work great. Been using opnsense myself for a while now and love it.
If you are a beginner and aren't running the newest hardware I would recommend pfsense as there is more support content for it.

If you are doing the burn in with truenas what I do is run badblocks with a block size of 4096 and then a long smart test.

m9x3mos got a reaction from Needfuldoer in Does anyone konow where to find easy step-by-step ZFS backup guide?
Snapshot of zfs don't work as a backup.
That doesn't keep copies of files that could be individually read or restored with another system.
Snapshots just keep a record of the binary changes in the files between them. And when you apply the snapshot back it will put you back at a certain point in time.
If you want the data on an external drive that can be read directly, rsync or similar task is what you want to be doing.

I would also check to ensure c states are enabled and working. If they are you should see the clock speed dip when not in use. While the system is idle or shouldn't draw that much power.

Yeah, the last time I saw an article about this, the rates that were being paid weren't even enough to cover the energy costs to run it with the rates I am charged at home let alone earn profit.

Just as an fyi, nothing I tried in settings was able to get it pulled down.
The best way to force it I found was to grab an iso of the latest version and run the installer to complete the update that way.

When it starts up that first time press CTRL+SHIFT+F3
The computer will reboot you to a desktop that will allow you to complete the setup without setting up an account.
Then when you are done run
    Sysprep /oobe /shutdown command
This will shutdown the system and be ready for the end user.

100% this. You will be asking for trouble if you do that. You will really want some sort of VPN solution.
I can suggest looking into running tailscale if you don't want to go crazy setting up a limited one.

The other good thing with zfs is you don't have to worry about losing the data when the controller fails like you would with any hardware solution.
