After watching the last couple of episodes of Scrapyard Wars (love them btw), it was really bugging me that Luke was checking his phone all the time while driving.
I've had my share of close calls from texting drivers while on my motorbike and I have a friend that was knocked of his bike by a texting driver. it's been a big problem in the UK.

I'm sure guys in BC already know the score, but for those that don't it's a decent fine + demerits if you get caught:  https://www.caa.ca/distracted-driving
SYW is already filmed, so we're in the hands of the editors now, but for future roaming projects, Linus / Procurement, please make sure your guys 'on duty' have hands free kits or a dashboard mounts available so phones can be safely used as satnavs.

Not just for their safety... Selfishly I want you guys to continue making videos uninterrupted

(and for the smartarses oot there - yes, I know this season's SYW was filmed in California where the fines are insignificant, but that doesn't make it any less dangerous)

From what I remember, towards the end of episode 1 and fairly often during the first half of episode 2.
The phone is mostly out of shot, but at one point while steering you can clearly see it in his hand.

It doesn't look like texting or reading as the glances are quick - so it's more likely satnav use in which case it should be up on the dash to minimise the time it takes to move the eyes, see the image then back to the road and surroundings.

As a biker I see it all the time. The number of people that think that they can't be seen texting or reading but the constant glancing at their crotch or door card makes it so obvious. The weaving down the road is also a pretty obvious giveaway

    Everyone behind you
So many times I've seen a queue of traffic sitting at a green light because the person front of the stopped cars is busy reading their phone ....

I've seen people miss complete traffic light rotations and then sheepishly roll up to the (again) red after they realise there's no cars in front of them

We're creatures of habit, so set up some routines that help you sleep.

Try at least an hour before you go to bed:
    Avoiding visual stimulation (TV/Phone etc)
Switch off some lights so the room gets darker (triggers your body to release some melatonin)
Have a pre-bed routing. Wash face, brush teeth, fluff pillows ... whatever it is your body will recognise the routine and get you ready for resting.

Yes and no, Yes because all overclocking is thermally dependent, so improving the thermals will more often than not result in better overclocking.  However some yields are just so average that even the best thermal scenario (from factory or aftermarket) will not give a better result.   How varying the yields are can be seen as many intel chips are the exact same die, it's just they disable under performing features and then stamp it as a  lower spec chip rather than a xeon/i7 etc.

Hi everyone , my names mark but I've been called Oss most of my life .
So here's my story , from leaving school in 1987 I went straight into welding/fabrication mostly on structural but eventually went into making boats , it was a job I truly loved a hobby I got paid for was how I described it to people , until 9 months ago when I managed to have a heart attack at the top of 48 stairs (which may I just add is'nt the best place to have one , I don't reccommend it).
After a short stint in hospital I was released to go home but as I had managed to destroy my right knee and my left ankle , Im having to have plenty of trips back for various opperations which will eventually get me back up on my feet and back into work (seriously that day cannot come quick enough),so that being told I'll stop waffling and tell you what Im up to now with all this glorious free time I have .
I was sat on the sofa one day expecting a call from my sister who lives out in Australia on Skype with my trusty old laptop which was as much as I had ever really done with computers , while waiting I put YouTube on for a bit of late 60s rock music to while away the time then just left it running , I have no idea how it went from Hendrix to Linus but there he was super excited about some box with fans on it and copper pipes and his enthusiasm was a bit captivating so I watched on this started at 9pm GMT on a Wednesday evening and I was just clicking on every video I could find until I realised it was 11am on Thursday but by then I was hooked !
I immediately got up and hobbled to bed but with a new found interest and the words "tomorrow I will build a computer" buzzing through my head , I laid there for what felt like forever but couldn't sleep , I got up told the wife to get in the car we're going shopping (first time she's never argued) and off we went .
Three hours later we came home she had gone mental at the prices of everything I had wanted to buy so to save on being further in the doghouse I had just agreed and come home empty handed , thats when I recalled watching Scrapyard wars , I opened up an Ebay account and a PayPal account and set to buying what I could on the budget she had allowed me which was exactly £200 I bought an old 600 watt cpu no idea of the make , an Asus M5A78L  motherboard , an AMD FX 4100 cpu , a Seagate 500gb HDD , a 60gb OCZ SSD , a random biggish heatsink and a Corsair Carbide case and 8gb of DDR3 ram .
Within a week all the bits had arrived and so I set about building my first computer 6 hours later (yes I know) it was done I had even managed to put an operating system onto it myself and the best bit was I still had £70 left so I would be able to get a GPU which was just killing me , I had to have one !
I bought what I could afford which was a Asus GT 660 , I put it in and found that I really had no idea if my build was good or bad as I had never played a game on a computer before , the only game I had really heard of was World of Wsrcraft and so I signed up , I downloaded the game on my new computer and my laptop to compare , and in my eyes it was like day and night the difference I was the happiest man alive I had created a beast as far as I was concerned !
As I got to making friends on WoW they introduced me to other games on Steam and found that the beast was lacking so I put it up for sale with offers and within a day I was offered £280 the deal was done and I set about getting the parts for a new build , its gone on from there Im still no expert and I still havent been able to afford my dream build or even close but I have at least got a capable computer now , its still made from second hand parts but Im more than happy with it for now .
Like I said though Im still learning so if I pop up and seems like Im asking an obvious question , I am truely sorry but I have got a great deal of enthusiasm

I'm pretty sure silicon lottery is more towards how pure the silicon is allowing it to function optimal on higher frequencies, heat is a great weight factor but not the sole one, even if you delid two identical CPUs one can still be better than the other given the silicon purity.

WeeemRCB reacted to Mira Yurizaki in Are "Silicon Lottery" CPU's really just CPU's with a good heat transfer?
The lottery has to do with how well the processor is made to specifications. Manufacturing leads to different variances (i.e. defects) and Intel only tests to make sure the processor can perform within a specified tolerance. A "bad" processor had enough defects to not overclock well, yet still be within the tolerance of what its stock performance is. The defects in the manufacturing could affect things like the variance of switching, if the transistors can handle a faster clock signal, etc.

Thermals have nothing to do with it. All thermals have to do with overclocking is it has a relationship with this principle: P = CV^2f, where P is the amount of power (or heat) dissipated, C is the capacitance of the transistor, V is the voltage, and f is the frequency. And you need to dissipate heat in order for the processor to remain stable. Also, while you might think voltage can play a huge role because it's squared, it's very small compared to f, like at least 8-9 orders of magnitude.

Also the title should be "silicon", not "silicone", unless we're talking about exploding breast implants.

WeeemRCB reacted to done12many2 in Are "Silicon Lottery" CPU's really just CPU's with a good heat transfer?
I have binned and delidded a lot of 7700k CPUs so I'll use a 7700k as an example.

During my binning process I run the stock chips in Cinebench R15 starting at 5 GHz up to as high as they will go.

The current chip that I'm using would run R15 at 5.2 GHz / 1.355v (74c) prior to delid and 5.2 / 1.325v (54c) after delid.

At 5.3 GHz with the same test (load), the 7700k would require 1.46v (95c + throttling) prior to delid and 1.37v (64c) after delidding.  Notice how prior to delid, the voltage jump was no longer linear and became exponential, but after delidding, the voltage fell back into line.  Cooling matters.

All my binning testing is done with my test bench and a  Corsair H115i AIO cooler an not my full custom loop, which explains the higher then normal temps for a R15 type load.

Once I've found a good one, I then add it to the custom loop for further testing and increased cooling (more speed).

Silicon leakage and how it is impacted by high temperature increases greatly as you reach the silicon speed limits of a chip.

    Hopefully that helps.

That is actually quite significant, I wasnt expecting that big of a difference. I would imagine going from air (in my case) to a custom loop + delid would result in substantially better results.
