    Hello,

If you can wait and have the bugdet, the 3080Ti is the best card you'll get out of those 4. Unless they somehow make it worse than the 2080Ti.

Dude, Linus doesn't even do stuff for the Canadian audience as a Canuck.

Phrased like one of those insane math Q's from a middle school textbook

Linus owns a company that makes cat chow, and he has three versions.  A premium, high fat variant, a lean but still high quality version and a mass market budget option.

He can only make 1 type of chow per day, and wants to maximize the amount of chow sold to make back the cost.

    His userbase looks like this
6 million cats who love the premium, and are willing to eat the lean or the occasional budget option
2.5 million cats that love the lean, but don't mind the premium, and find the budget interesting but not enjoyable
0.5 million cats that love the budget option, but will still buy the premium option as a form of wish fulfillment

To maximize sales and reduce loss from production, what should Linus do?

Nice!! This was my first time cooling the GPU so I went with pre-assembled. I wanted this card, GeForce RTX 2080 Ti SEA HAWK EK X. But , I could not get it as everyone was out of stock and did not know when they would have one, so I had no choice but go with FTW3 Hydro copper. I also do not like the branding.

Hmm... Guru3d used the traditional oc-path on the 3600(x), that's a big bummer, and it doesn't work, explaining their low gain. They should have tried to lower the volts instead (-0.05 to -0.1, trial and error) and use a better cooler. Disappointing.
Tom's did better, although they are calling Phoronix 'phornix' (pornix?) - I don't know if it's intentional.

Not really a surprise IMHO, AMD has been lagging behind horribly in the GPU department since for nearly a decade.  As someone who has owned Hawaii, fiji, polaris and vega cards aplenty, there is never a true high end competitor to be had.  Sometimes good value, but just as often not.  AM4 and ryzen literally pulled amd out of imminent bankruptcy but that won't magically make the GPU division God-tier.  As money goes into GPU projects and the new technologies mature/go into production over the next few years we may see a very interesting wave of tech similar to the way Zen completely reinvigorated the CPU side of things.

Making GPU's is a 5-7 year project though, so we shall have to wait

Meh on the 8700k trouncing anything lol.  I had an 8086k, honestly not much better than a clocked up 3600x.  Not exactly a relevant chip in any discussion about current tech.  Please refer to this absolutely monstrous guru3d article, and for comparison against a heavily overclocked and current i7, the tomshardware article.

The TLDR on both is that the 3600x holds NO punches, and strongly competes at the highest level on gaming loads, even beating out it's more premium HCC brethren due to an emphasis on high single core and multithreaded clocks

Do you have any other high end fans?  While the ML pro are nice, I've used both he 120 and 140mm versions and been disappointed with both.  They're loud at mid-high rpms, have a low performance ceiling, cost too much compared to better products and are, at best, in the top 5th percentile when it comes to all around performance and high end fans.

(You can take my words with a grain of salt, but I own/have owned 45+ mid to high end fans.  The ML are nice, but in the end their only novel feature is the maglev hub)

Damascus got a reaction from WereCat in A possibly stupid idea: direct water on delid
100% what @Chen G and @WereCat have mentioned.  A low surface area, perfectly flat and extremely high power density heat exchanger is the worst possible option.  And those three criteria describe a cpu die to perfection ?

This is why a high quality block costs so much.  To get the highest surface area possible (and therefore, performance) you need to have incredibly fine fins on par with those found on a skivved or stacked tower cooler, with a gap only slightly larger than the fins themselves.  This drives machining complexity way up, and increases a risk of failure

Here's a cryos cuplex NEXT, arguably the most advanced cpu block on the market/ever.  The fins are layered, sectioned and maximize the amount of space possible in the area of a waterblock

Heatkiller IV, representing the current high end block design.  It's simple, it works and it has dependable performance.  The fins direct flow towards a drain area, maximizing the use of that finnage

Regressing backwards, we have the thermaltake W4.  It uses what appears to be skivved aluminum, wherein aluminum sheets are pressed together, creating a finstack.  This is inefficient, but can get the job done.  It takes a hit in directed flow though, leading that surface area to be largely wasted

Finally, we get back to the ancient days.  This is the closest you'll get to a flat sheet of copper, with a minimal amount of surface area and machining.  Even without that, it could still get by on the sheer mass and flat area available for heat transfer.

Damascus reacted to WereCat in A possibly stupid idea: direct water on delid
If you mean that the water will be directly touching the die, I don't think it has been done... for a good reason.

    Issue #1
It would be extremely difficult to seal it in such way that the water doesn't get on the small caps that are usually located right next to the die while at the same time getting good and evenly spread mounting pressure.

And that's not even the main issue, even if you got that to work there is

    Issue #2
It would simply be worse than using a water block.
Why? Because you would be missing the fin stack as there would be no copper plate.
That fin stack is extremely important for the water flow as it forces the water trough multiple channels and it accelerates the cooling process as the water is able to soak more heat from the fins due to much more surface area.

You actually use the copper plate with fins for cooling, the water is there just to transfer the heat into a radiator.
When you remove those fins and leave just water, you significantly reduce the surface area and thus will get worse cooling.

Damascus reacted to Chen G in A possibly stupid idea: direct water on delid
It doesn't work because water isn't a good conductor of heat. if you put water directly over a normal die you only have the die's surface area in contact with the water which won't transfer a lot of heat at all.
This is a solvable problem but not DIY solvable, you could for example etch patterns into the die to increase surface area or increase pressure and flow speed of the water to increase heat transfer, and there are legitimate research in these areas.
