well in all fairness they hyped the card not the cooler and the card lived up to what AMD said it should (780). the fact that the aftermarket ones are competing with the reference 780 Ti is a bonus.

VBLANK is a VESA standard. No one owns the rights to it or can patent it. Nvidia seems weirdly scared of open source or GPU agnostic things. If Nvidia truely cared about PhysX, for example, they would fix it and make it work properly on CPUs then make an OpenCL version so everyone can use it. That said, I really don't think this will be as good as G-Sync. It's a step in the right direction, but we need to replace vsync all together, not add more things that rely on it.

If they can pull this off, it will be amazing.

The power saving idea on the notebooks is also a great addition and use of the technology, leaving the display in an idle, non refreshing state when there is no update in frames from the GPU. Not to mention, in theory this doesn't have a limit on what panels it can support as its just enabled at the factory (right? i think?).

Looks interesting none the less. Although AMD does not yet have a clear target for market release (time & date) or product names, etc.. But here's to the future!

EDIT: added information & article extract. Elaborated slightly.

EDIT 2: Here is the Wiki listing for the VESA VBLANK standard: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coordinated_Video_Timings

EDIT 3: Please read this thread before commenting [ http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/99660-the-real-difference-between-free-sync-vs-g-sync/ ]. Gives you a better understanding of the technology, this article is just bringing the fact that it exists and basic information.

So Nvidia purposefully developed a proprietary technology that there was already an industry wide standard for but was not implemented, all for what?  So it can extort licence fees from everyone and because only Nvidia cards will ever support it, and so it can hold control over AMD and Intel.

I was all for G-sync but now that it just turns out to be a proprietary solution I'm more than irked, Nvidia is basically acting like Sony.

I'm glad there is this solution using VBLANK which is already part of the standard and just needs simply to be implemented into monitors and to software, so both AMD and Intel can use it to the same effect as G-sync, an open to all solution is always preferable to proprietary nonsense.

Arndroid reacted to TechSage in Why NOT to get the 760/770 4GB
Okay so in a nutshell, don't get the 760 or 770 4GB version because the memory bus simply isn't big enough to accommodate for the amount of VRAM that it has.

The general rule of thumb is 128 bit per gigabyte of VRAM. But the 770 has 256 bit bus so that means that 2GB of VRAM can be used, but not 4GB since it just isn't big enough. If you look at the R9 290X, it has a 512 bit bus, so that means it can use all 4GB of VRAM that it has.

Edit: Although you  may use a little over 2GB, there is so much data going through the bus and due to the bus not being big enough, it will drop your FPS.

Feel free to link this if someone doesn't know why everyone is saying not to get the 770 4GB

Update: It's confirmed, you don't benefit by getting the 4GB version (this benchmark is only for the 770): http://alienbabeltech.com/main/gtx-770-4gb-vs-2gb-tested/3/

16:10 is a master race aspect ratio.
Apple is using it, programmers are using it, you get more room in height, it's a superior experience.

Sadly, it isn't mainstream anymore, because of the hipster 1080p trade-mark. And therefore has become expensive.

The Dell P2314H is a good choice.  The U2414H would be good as well if you think you might want a multi-monitor setup in the future; it has a very thin bezel and supports DisplayPort daisy-chaining.

The U2412M or ASUS PA248Q are also nice if you like a 16:10 aspect ratio.

    Arndroid reacted to TechFan@ic in 9370 v i5 4670k v i7 4770k?
I recommend none of the above really.
The FX 9370 is just a higher clocked FX 8350/8320, it's not a good value unless you find it on sale.
The i7 4770K isn't a good value either compared to the 4670K, it's the exact same chip with hyper-threading enabled.
The performance gains from hyper-threading are not consistent and range from 20% performance uplift to actually reducing overall performance.

Get an FX 8320 instead, paired with a good cooler you can take it beyond the FX 9370 clocks, you can often find it for $150 or less. It's frankly an unbeatable chip in terms of performance/cost.
Convert your savings into a more powerful graphics.

In terms of video editing, transcoding, rendering and compression the AMD 8 core chips are usually as fast as the 4770K and sometimes slightly behind, they're consistently faster than the 4670K.
In recent games like BF4 & Crysis 3 the 8 core AMD chips trade blows with the i5 4670K but are generally on equal footing.

    Nailpolish == Aceton
For what I know, Aceton is aggressive, and will also clean off the branding/logo on your CPU, it might leave ink marks because of that..?

I would avoid that option if I were you, and just get Artic Clean or/and 99.9% (or anything over 90%...) isopropyl alcohol.
I'm using 99.9% to clean the the CPU and cooler first till it is clean, and on top of that I use the Artic Clean solution.

    Edit:
Also, don't use paper towels like toilet/kitchen paper.
If you don't have anything like an microfibre cloth, get some ol' coffee filters. (Coffee with hair? No thank you. )

I like the minimalistic and simple design of the Define R4.

I also bought it for the fact that it is silence optimized, which my build is aimed at. (All fans in my system are Noctua's)
I'm gonna put two 290's in there for example... I don't see the problem?
(All though, I'm probably gonna cool them with silent 140mm closed loop water coolers thanks to the NZXT G10.)

You'll lose TRIM support in RAID, I'm not sure what that'll mean in the long run with quality Samsung SSD's though..
And you only read/write 50% of the data you use, because of RAID0, so they should last longer.

I want to put 2x Samsung 120GB EVO drives in RAID0 in my next build. (So I can put my 128GB Pro in my laptop)
