Samsung 840 Pro 128GB - Is RAID0 worth it?

Hi,

I currently have 1 Samsung 840 Pro 128GB drive and was wondering if I would notice any speed improvement if I got another one and run them both in RAID0. Now, I understand the risks and that's not a problem as I backup and don't store anything important on my system drive anyway.

I remember Linus said that going back to his 8 SSD RAID0 array after using single SSD's he noticed a huge improvement and didn't realize how much he missed the speed... but, that's 8 SSD's although they are slower models... So has anyone here upgraded from a single SSD to a RAID0 array and noticed any improvement just in general / normal usage? Because I know sequential speeds will almost double but I'm asking more about general windows / programs usage.

Yes, there will be an improvement in speed. As linus said 8 ssd's in raid zero is insane, and even just 2 will be a big improvement. Although going past two ssd's in raid zero is a little much, and has extremely high diminishing returns.

I don't think it's worth it and I have 2 Vertex 4s in raid 0.

You'll lose TRIM support in RAID, I'm not sure what that'll mean in the long run with quality Samsung SSD's though..

And you only read/write 50% of the data you use, because of RAID0, so they should last longer.

 

I want to put 2x Samsung 120GB EVO drives in RAID0 in my next build. (So I can put my 128GB Pro in my laptop)

Yeah as I said I know sequential reads & writes will pretty much double, but did you actually notice Windows / Programs / Games running faster?

It's faster.

Not worth it imo. Raid 0 only increases sequential transfer speeds. Doesn't feel faster besides loading large files and transferring files.
