Sammy, I think you hit the nail on the head 100% with this. There is some clear abuse of power going on in the discord. The LMG community should be a place where people feel free to speak about things that interest them. People are being banned/muted for disagreeing with moderators over the simplest little things.

Not to name names, but there is a mod who very clearly breaks the rules about not going off topic. I will add, this admin/mod was the person who wrote this rule. Having a community like you mentioned must be awesome, everyone would be free to discuss anything they wanted to with no fear of being banned.

I remember about a year ago, someone was banned for openly discussing about them being suicidal. I can only imagine this was the opposite of helping this person on their road to recovery- and is potentially life threatening. Mods said that the Discord TOS is to BAN suicidal people- which is quite literally false.

I'd say this is the most obvious and glaring issue with the LTT Discord, the fact that so much moderation is done at the discretion of a mod when in reality no rules have actually been broken. The "high quality memes" subject is so touchy and frankly impossible to really moderate considering each person has an opinion or view of what is "high quality"

Warship is just another disaster show, the fact "poop", "bathwater" and "bruh" are 'filtered words' just to name a few (I have a hoarding problem, can't help it) shows how flawed of a system it truly is.. oh and don't get started on how simple regex to fix "Virgin Media" being filtered on such an amazing bot that is well coded could probably be.

I never felt a need to re-engage on the forums to get my LTT community fix, but sadly the way the LTT Discord has become a minefield of constantly having my messages deleted without any warning has become.. tiresome.. I am however glad to have met some people whom I can actually communicate with outside of the server and laugh at the amount of backwards things going on.

You have to realize that until VERY recently, AMD wasn't even a competitor in the CPU space. Why would any major system builder partner with them after a few demos and product launches? AMD has to prove themselves in the Pro space for system builders like Apple to start using them. They have only begun doing that now, after the release of TR2 and and EPYC.

AvocadosGuac reacted to Zando_ in 2 ram sticks vs 4 sticks of 64Gb on ryzen build?
^^^ I mean for me it isn't lol, but I run HEDT. Going for 4 sticks makes sense because I can still use quad channel while having 4 slots free (on an ATX or larger mobo) in case I need more capacity in future. On mainstream, there's much less reason to go for 4 sticks. In fact in most cases you want to avoid it, as it's harder on the IMC when running higher clocked RAM, and using all your slots in one go means you can't add more later without replacing your kit and then buying a new kit that's at least as big as the old one plus whatever you wanted to add on top.

OP, if you'll only need 64GB and don't see yourself going up in future, then just run whichever is the cheapest 2 or 4 stick kit that gets you there. If you need to possibly add more in future, then go for a 2x32GB kit. What are the VMs doing anyways that needs that much RAM though? Also what CPU are you actually running?

No. Mainstream just runs it in two sets of dual channel. HEDT from X79 forwards will run 4 sticks in quad channel or 8 sticks in two sets of quad channel. And Intel's latest Xeons will run 6 sticks in hexa channel or 12 sticks in two sets of hexa channel. And X58 would run 3 sticks in triple channel or 6 sticks in two sets of triple channel. All the HEDT options will still run two sticks in dual channel, X58 would run 4 sticks in dual channel, actually losing bandwidth. I don't know if Intel's Xeons would run 4 sticks in quad or drop all the way to dual.

Not true. The 2080 draws ~ 250 watts. he still has "400" watts left. That CPU, even overclocked wont touch 100.

I dont care how much RGB they have, its not gonna draw 300watts.
Download aida64. Run the stress test. If your temps exceed 80c, you have a cooling issue. I would suggest reinstalling your CPU cooler and seeing if the issue persists.

looks pretty decent. All depends on pricing though. as the article i linked there says, its almost as good as a Samsung 970EVO. If its less, go for it. You also might want to consider a slower SATA based SSD for less cost, and also throw in a couple TB of hard drive space.

It doesn't matter what EVGA says about a minimum recommended PSU. Those numbers are VERY conservative and you should do your OWN calculations, and then add ~ 25%.
I could run two 2080's in SLI with a 3900x on a 750watt psu and everything would be fine.

Just read the same thing about the mobo and didn't realize that was an option for Windows, thanks Guac! I think my old DFI Lanparty board had a similar additional PSU connection required but it was needed because we used to crank up the original 64bit AMD chips arooo!

Hello, Sinus Lebastians of this forum
I come asking for some suggestions, advice, or any help you'd be willing to give. I have never built a system before, so please be gentle with me
I will follow the recommendations given at the top of the New Builds and Planning thread and try to keep them in the topics. If there is any info that would be helpful to know and is not listed, please don't hesitate to ask.
    1. Budget & Location
My budget is fairly flexible, since I have been thinking about financing most of the parts, but I would say I be as efficient with my money as possible. The minimum I'd be willing to spend would be like ~1500U$ and the upper limit would be ~3500U$. That said, I'm really interested in cost to performance, so I'd be willing to go above the range for something more worthy of my money.
    2. Aim
The uses listed in de crescent order by frequency: MS Office/browsing, Gaming (Outer Worlds, Civ VI, Minecraft, Arma III, R6 siege, For honor), Solid Works (rarely other CAD softwares), coding and running a Linux VM, and Photoshop.
    3. Monitors
My intention is in running a 144hz 1440p monitor and I have a spare 60hz 1080p BenQ laying around that I would want to use.
    4. Peripherals
I plan on using Windows. Now, ever since the video Anthony did on gaming on a Linux I've been interested in trying it out, would you guys recommend it? I already have a mouse and a mouse pad, but seriously need a good mechanical keyboard.

what's your current monitor resolution/refresh rate?

I'd suggest just saving up and waiting for like the RX 5800/Nvidia 3070/3080 and buying a new monitor at that point.

Hi friends, I'm returning to PC hardware after a brief (10 year) hiatus.

I have done my basic homework and would appreciate a quick review of where I'm at with things. I generally look for value / upgrade path.

    First the context / prereqs
    1. Budget & Location
East coast Canada - targeting around $1500 CAD, not afraid to go a bit over if it makes sense.
    2. Aim
Killing my 7 yr old son in Fortnight on his switch and converting him into a lifelong PC gamer lol. Youtube video editing. Probably get into some AAA titles myself.
    3. Monitors
I currently have a BenQ 24-inch LED Monitor, 2ms, HDMI (GL2460HM) which I will continue to use for the time being and then upgrade to a 144Hz IPS panel like BenQ EX2780Q 27 Inch QHD 1440P IPS 144Hz Gaming Monitor | Hdri | DCI-P3 | USB-C after I get my rig up and running.
    4. Peripherals
I have Corsair Strafe keyboard and M65 mouse.
    5. Why are you upgrading?
Currently running on a 6 yr old Sammy laptop w/ a 640m GPU.

    And now the build -

Cool site that parts picker... it told me the mobo needs an additional 4PIN that the PSU does not have so I will have to change that. Anything else stand out to anyone as a mistake? Thanks for your time and consideration.

Entirely depends on what we're comparing,
M.2 drives range from those which use the SATA interface, which have speeds of around 550/550 Megabyte per second (read/write), which is the same as 'normal SSD's'. There are also those which use the PCIE interface, which range from 1500/500MBPS up to and above 3500/3000MBPS+
Keeping that in mind, it also depends on what size drive you're looking at.

To me, it usually makes the most sense to:
    - a 500GB M.2 PCIE (a more 'budget' option perhaps, like the 660p)
    - a large HDD (think 2-4TB)
    - another SSD if you truly need the fast storage
But that is just what most people who absolutely need the space+speed could get. That is not a feasible or logical solution for everyone.
