PlayStation 2 got a reaction from handymanshandle in I don't understand the obsession over thin and light
My laptop is a generic 15-inch copy-paste HP that's not really thin but hardly bulky and heavy. And it's the perfect form factor for me, especially since it has a DVD drive! But it's hardly perfect for some. I don't need nor desire a particularly thick laptop like a 2000s IBM ThinkPad because that's not an ecosystem that I have any investment to make in, but super thin and light is hardly desirable to me, too.
Really, the perfect laptop size is subjective to people. Some desire 11 inchers that are tiny, light and thin while others desire durable, expandable and heavier laptops that have great battery life. For my needs, I like a laptop that'll get me through a decent session of web browsing in the living room that isn't too heavy, and my laptop serves that purpose excellently.

That's reasonable indeed! They're hitting the point where DVD drives became the standard optical drive and starting to flood the market. Good, good.

Most people don't need a big, bulky laptop, and thin-and-light can be a distinct advantage if you have to carry your laptop around for a long time, such as on a campus or at a trade show.  You may think that shedding a couple of pounds of weight or a few tenths of an inch wouldn't mater, but if you've ever had to carry a laptop in a shoulder bag while you traipse across a college or convention centre (especially if you have loads of extra gear), you know it matters.

I've said it to people before, and I'll say it again to you: please don't declare yourself the sole arbiter of taste.  There are good reasons for thin-and-light portables, just as there are good reasons for beefy gaming and workstation laptops.  It's not that much of a stretch to accept that there's no such thing as a one-size-fits-all design; you can address a wide range of people, but a frequent business traveler shouldn't be stuck with a big machine just because you want to play Apex Legends.

PlayStation 2 reacted to Commodus in iPhone 11 ANOTHER LCD?
Can we drop the false "bigger numbers are always better" argument, please?

You know damn well the XR has a high-quality screen (828p... hey, it matters), does more with 3GB than Android phones do with 4GB, that its rear camera (not so much its front) produces better photos than virtually every budget device, and that its battery life puts those of some more expensive phones to shame, let alone cheaper ones.  This isn't to say the XR is the ultimate value-for-money phone in its price class (OnePlus claims that title), but it kicks the absolute ass out of €200 Android phones.

PlayStation 2 reacted to Zodiark1593 in iPhone 11 ANOTHER LCD?
Good LCDs do exist. They lose out somewhat on contrast, but gain a lot in battery life and longevity (burn-in and color shifting), and Apple's LCDs tend to have very good color accuracy. For someone keeping a device well past the 2 year mark (more common as of late), you'll probably want to opt for an LCD over OLED.

First up: those specs are fan-made and not necessarily real, although they are based on common rumors.

LCD isn't automatically worse.  It doesn't have the contrast ratio or low-light abilities of OLED, but it's potentially brighter, tends to be sharper at the same resolution and doesn't have burn-in issues.

Now, you might have an argument about the 828p resolution, but LCD by itself is fine.  And besides, the iPhone XR has good battery life -- I don't think Apple minds maintaining that advantage by using the same display one more year.

Well, they're a media production company, and you're not - it's not meant as an insult, but they seem to know what they are doing.

Plus it means they have all that footage to go back and re-use for whatever they want.

Linus himself isn't rolling in cold hard cash. Net worth is a very misleading number.

Linus Media Group, the company, is likely worth at least a few million - and Linus owns the company, so therefore that's his net worth too. But that net worth is only worth a damn if someone chose to buy the company from him.

I'm sure he's living comfortably at home - I'm sure they have decent savings, etc. But I'm also sure he's not "cash rich".

Also, whether his employees are "broke asf" (source, please?), is not really his fault or concern. He pays them well - well above minimum wage. They're not raking in millions either, but they are making good skilled worker wages.

they film in raw 8k, which takes up a huge amount of space. they keep their entire backlog of videos stored locally. and they do work not on youtube. they do training videos and TV stuff all the time, you just dont see it cuz they dont post that stuff to youtube.
im surprised it took as long as it did to fill up petabyte project

Raw video devours egregious quantities of data, especially 8K Redcode RAW. They also probably delete very little, holding onto footage even if it never gets used in a final product.

I got a PS2 memory card! But not just any memory card, but a 64MB memory card!

Nah, but seriously, the main attraction of this memory card is its inclusion of Free McBoot, which enables me to play Japanese Gran Turismo demos on real hardware!

PlayStation 2 reacted to dalekphalm in How do I shift my YouTube content style without losing fans
    Good points.

My suggestion would be to slowly change the style of your content over time - giving viewers lots of time to adapt - and also giving you time to see what new content your viewers do - and do not - enjoy.

Start with a quick update video saying you're going to try this new thing, and then introduce one new type of video (Let's say it's a Solo LP, or a collab with a new person, etc - whatever you decide). Run that new type of video say once per week and see how it does. Then slowly introduce more types of videos as time goes on.

When your friends eventually do want to leave, make a backlog for that moment, so that they don't all just disappear overnight - that way you can spread it out.

And when you learn that they're finally leaving, do another update video and let people know you've still got some content, but these people are moving on with their lives. Ideally by that point, you'll already have plenty of content to replace them with.

Just gradually bring new people in while the old friends are still with you. Don't make a bunch of videos with new faces all of a sudden out of nowhere, maybe make an update video to say what is going to happen with the channel.

You simply can't avoid losing "fans", there will always be some of them who subscribed just for that one friend of yours who will likely be leaving... Or just don't like the new folks that you bring in.

Based on the article, it doesn't look like it has anything to do with gun use within the US. Instead, they are looking at where the scope is being used outside the US.

Weapons, weapon parts, and anything that could conceivably be used as a weapon (including encryption software for a period) is subject to strict export laws from the US (I don't know about other countries, but suspect that it is similar in most places), which I believe require the company to do a lot of paperwork to get approval for each country that they want to export to. If this scope is being widely used in countries that they have not received the necessary permissions, there must be a company that is exporting them in violation of US law.

This is definitely not a necessary or proportional way to go about doing that. If they had requested just the aggregated country data (how many downloads per country), that would allow them to achieve that goal without invading the users' privacy.

Many people here work with computers as a hobby rather than a job, which is completely fine. Hell, I do it as a personal hobby largely because I don't want to take that hobby into a grander scale. I'd argue that the best occupation for people who work on building PCs would be working at places like a PC builder store, maybe applying some knowledge of PC parts at Best Buy and maybe a PC repair shop.
Also, for anyone who talks shit about you spending $600 on a laptop because it suits your needs? That's dumb as hell. I blew a grand total of $300 on a refurbished HP laptop with a 1366x768 screen and a hard drive because it had what I wanted: a Ryzen 5 2500u. And I'm proud as hell of only spending $300 on it.

The answer is: "It depends" - I'm a SysAdmin/IT generalist, and I'm extremely knowledgeable (though granted, I'm not necessarily super up to date on every single new part - but that's just a bit of research if required) on PC Building and speccing together good builds.

But that doesn't mean every SysAdmin is - or even most people in IT. Especially if they're software focused or Network Admins, etc.

The reality is that "Working with computers" doesn't inherently mean you're knowledgeable about building custom PC's.

On the flip side, I'd say people who work at PC Building shops, like CanadaComputers and MicroCenter (and old NCIX) would likely be the ones who are the most up to date, since they're the ones doing custom builds every day.

Working at a place like Best Buy or Staples or another electronics store that sells OEM PC's can often be the next best option - but you'll get a lot more hit-or-miss results with knowledge, and they won't necessarily have the hands on experience with doing a full custom build.

As for someone mocking you because you bought a $600 laptop that suits your needs? Fuck them. If they can't understand the benefits, and that you didn't have a requirement for higher end hardware, that's on them. There will always be people like them.

With that in mind, there's often a justified reason for spending more on a laptop, even if the raw specs aren't better. Things like build quality, design of the physical machine (how the hinges work, the touchpad, etc), and so on - these things can make a tangible difference.

I spent near enough $1600 CAD (after tax - $1400 pre-tax) on my personal laptop - an HP Spectre x360 13" - it has good specs, but not "blow your mind amazing": i5-8250U, 8GB RAM, 256GB NVME SSD, 1080P display.

Could I have gotten a much more powerful laptop for a similar or lower price? Almost certainly. But I would have compromised in other areas, such as battery or build quality.

That does not mean everyone should buy that laptop either - I decided those non-spec related items were worth the extra cost, but for someone else, getting a $600 or $800 laptop instead with similar specs but less rigid build quality will be a perfectly acceptable compromise.

If you're looking to save money, trust me, don't look at anything newer, or reviews, or even play with demo devices/friend's devices. Pretty much, the phone in your hand is the only phone that matters. Only consider doing any of the above when you feel your current device doesn't fulfill your needs.

As for maximum useful life (as in, before speed impacts basic usage), who knows. The A10 was a pretty substantial bump from the A9 (in more than just performance), and you have 3 GB of RAM in your model. Considering the current XR also has 3 GB, I doubt RAM will be the limiting factor for some time.
