Apple has a lot at stake here. They are fighting for control of their own platform. They are not going to back down.

Which is precisely what Apple is going to fight to prevent. No self respecting company would voluntarily hand over the control of their self built platform to a committee of politicians who don't know the difference between a smart phone and a toaster.

If you had actually read what I had typed, I said shops should be able to order chips for the logic boards from a catalog.

Who said anything about fair prices? Apple does not have to do any of this. They can charge whatever they want. If you ask me, replacement parts should cost a premium to prevent shops from building new machines out of replacement parts and selling them for profit.

Absolutely not. Being on the App Store is a privileged, not a right. Apple can take any developer off of the App Store for any reason.

For comp sci...... MacBook. Windows has come a long way with the linux subsystem, but it’s really hard to beat a Mac seeing as it’s literally Unix.

IMO, I would give Apple a serious consideration here. The specs will not match that of a windows machine, but the ease of use and integration with software dev work is huge. Plus, any serious compile jobs you may have you can always remote into your desktop or likely a university server VM to do heavy lifting.

Regarding thermals and heat, this thing gets hot pretty fast, even on simple tasks like YouTube and web browsing, but it is also very fast in dissipating heat due to the nature of full aluminium body. So if you install a sensor app, you will not be surprised seeing this thing idling around 50 ~ 60. But in reality, the whole machine doesn't feel that hot to touch, but in terms of longevity, I can't say for certain if it can last for 3 ~ 4 years, maybe after the warranty is out I need to clean it often. Also, if you frequently use social network like Facebook, Twitter,... 8GB of RAM in this base model is mostly not enough as it chews through memory even on Safari, so if you can help it go for 16GB of RAM

DrMacintosh reacted to RejZoR in Apple now accounting for almost half (47%) of phone sales
People still going on with this bullshit. Seriously? You know what people who do this are? Spec whores. All you ppl see is specs and nothing else. I'd rather have "720p" display than atrocious software support every single Android phone has. Any time. And people say it like it's all awful blurry or blocky like you're playing a game at 480p in 2020. It's a freaking tiny display. People who rave about 2K or 4K on these tiny screens are idiots. And I don't care if it offends you. I wouldn't mind if it topped at 1080p but in all honesty, I couldn't care less about it. Puts less stress on GPU and makes it run longer on same battery. Which is again something everyone mocks yet it lasts forever despite that. So, yeah, spec whores and nothing else.

Just because something is cheaper and offers better specs on paper doesn't make them a better product. Or even a better value. I've been on Android phones from Eiclar to Pie. I've mocked Apple and even said I'd never use their products, mostly because people using them were mostly pretentious idiots who only had it because it's a fashion statement. But after being feed up with Google's bullshit when it comes to privacy and horrendous updating experience on every single vendor I've decided one day to dump all of it and just throw myself into Apple's "ecosystem". And it's nothing what people say it is. The whole experience is so much better than on any Android phone even with some Apple nonsense included like no option to set default browser and stuff like that. It was STILL a better experience despite that. And boy everything is smooth and just sublime to use to a point it's unlikely I'll be returning to Android any time soon. There is still Google and their shit privacy, there is still atrocious updating of Android phones. And all the whining of how Apple locks you into their ecosystem that initially got me so worried is total BS. I'm now using 3 Apple products and I feel about as locked to their ecosystem as I have on Android. Hell, one of their products (AirPods) I exclusively use on Windows systems...

Yeah, it "only" has 720p display, yet it's better than 90% of shit Android vendors release. Let that sink in.

720p at that size could be swapped with 8K and you wouldn’t be able to tell. Or have android manufacturers brainwashed you into “bigger number means better” regardless of context?

DrMacintosh reacted to zeusthemoose in Apple Ordered to Pay $506.2 Million in Patent Lawsuit
    Summary
A Texas federal jury has ruled that Apple owes PanOptis and its sister companies a total of $506.2 million for patent infringement. PanOptis and its sister companies currently hold 7 patents relating to LTE technology. They are all non-operational companies and their sole source of income is through patent litigation. In other words, they are patent trolls.
PanOptis said that they had tried to offer Apple a global license before the lawsuit, but they had never made it past negotiations.
The jury ruled in favor of PanOptics saying that, Apple had failed to prove they did not infringe on PanOptics patents.
It is expected that Apple will appeal this decision.

    My thoughts
I have to say, I think Apple should have won this one. I find it weird that Apple had to prove that they didn't infringe on the patent instead of PanOptics having to prove that they did. That said, even if they did infringe on the patents, I dont think companies should be able to just register a bunch of patents and then sue a bunch of major companies to make money.

I understand adoption curve and the theory of crossing the chasm.. But the reaction here is a (very small) sample size of the broader market.

I'm not saying they could kill it before release. Let it run it's course. But it certainly doesn't look like a product I'm interested in buying upon first inspection.

If you have a gaming PC already, I would only consider a thin and light. The new 2020 XPS 15's are very nice machines and I could not recommend them more. The design and the speakers are just too good to pass up.

Unless you plan on gaming on the go, I would just stick with the Iris Plus Graphics models. It'll boost your battery life significantly and save a lot of cash.
