This, planning in advance is entirely pointless since the whole environment will have changed by the time you're ready to buy.

Wait until it's closer to buying time. Between now and summer prices will be drastically different.

No this isn't violating any rules but the conversation has derailed, and gotten out of hand so best to end it here.

SansVarnic reacted to colonel_mortis in Two thousand year old scroll decoded using machine learning
    Summary

Several paragraphs of text have been decoded from the inside of a scroll that was buried during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79. These scrolls were too fragile to physically unroll, so researchers took high resolution CT scans of the scrolls, and released the data to the public, promising $700,000 to the first team to decode 4 passages from the inside of the scroll, based on the scan (along with a number of other prizes along the way), before the end of 2023.

    My thoughts
This is an achievement that could only have been done with machine learning, and the technical feat here can't be understated. It has taken a lot of work to get this far, it's incredible to see what the community can achieve when it's given a goal like this. The $1M+ prize pool (donated by various mostly rich people) certainly helped to incentivise people to participate, and it will be interesting to see if this model gets adopted for any other projects in the future. If they are able to achieve their goal of extending this technology to read all 800 scrolls, this will be a big breakthrough in our understanding of Ancient Rome, let alone the other potential places where this technology could be used.

The goal as a forum is to have open discussion and debate. As for the troubleshooting section it is and has been the goal to provide an avenue for members to help each other and yes in a perfect world having everything being solved is great but let's be consciously realistic here. Sometime the answer is providing a direction for the member to take and not to give a specific answer to the issue. Open your mind to this prospect. Give a man a fish you feed him for a day... Teach him how to fish and you feed him for life.   (the fish isn't always the answer)

As alluded, this is a public and open space. No one is obligated to help or provide you with an answer. If you're finding lot of other threads getting solved and yours aren't, then its likely the way your presenting your issue/situation that may be causing it. Try looking for alternative methods for presenting your information you're looking for help from.

It reminds me of a camp many years ago where there was a murderer in the area who had broken into the main cabin, and left a note within a pizza box saying if they didn't leave, they would murder the little girls in the cabin nearby(part of the same camp). The staff didn't take the note seriously, and the little girls ended up being murdered.

Point is...even if there's a CHANCE that it's a joke, you're better off assuming it's not because the cost is so fuckin' high. Worst case, you wasted your time on a joke. Best case, you just saved some fuckin lives!
