Thiback reacted to ravenshrike in Threadripper: The inside story
https://www.forbes.com/sites/antonyleather/2017/09/05/amd-ryzen-threadripper-the-fascinating-story-behind-the-processor-that-beat-intel/#7fcdeb25230c
TL;DR A bunch of computer enthusiasts got bored and decided to whip up a competitor to Intel's EXTREME edition CPUs in their spare time. This is quite frankly hilarious given how badly it has discombobulated Intel.

Thiback reacted to zberry7 in AMD ships over 25,000 Radeon RX Vega graphics cards
Pretty interesting but also taking this with a grain of salt. Personally, I wouldn't buy either card but I want AMD to sell as many of these as possible.
Hopefully AMD sorts out the pricing issue and they learn from this launch. They need to claw back as much market share as can. Hopefully the consumer comes out on top

The UK government is planning to implement a new law which means that you will be able to communicate with a company that you want them to delete certain data they have of yours.
This means that posts etc. you will be able to be delete certain posts etc. which you have made in the past. This is good as it means that if you made a comment in the past you don't stand by now or similar it means you can delete it meaning people won't see you once thought that, issues is though is what can you remove as it may mean that you could remove something important etc. like Theresa May deleting one of her old posts etc. (or in a way like trump doing it if ever spreads to America) which are in a way shouldn't be deleted as they are public records and insights into what they are thinking.
This law could also increase the fines which companies get when data is leaked
which makes a bigger deterrent for companies to actually protect the data, as although to most people £500,000 is a hell of a lot of money to companies like google it's not.
There is still issues and much to be desired with this law though, as well that quote sums it all up
I think this is kinda contradictory to the governments stance on encryption considering they are against privacy there but for it here. The law like many laws is still unclear of what it could do though, as it could mean that something that shouldn't be deleted might be, so it's a difficult one at times, as in some cases this is great in others less so.

Thiback reacted to Mira Yurizaki in Paris is considering eSports for the 2024 Olympics
https://compete.kotaku.com/paris-olympic-committee-will-consider-esports-for-the-2-1797678847
Basically:
My first thought is this really blows up the boundaries to what is a sport and what isn't. However I'm still hesitant to include it in the Olympics. Plus other people brought up good points such as:
Olympic games do not necessarily require a commercial product to do. Using an eSports game does require a commercial product and so it would be a huge advertisement for said product. It's a barrier for some countries who can't afford a computer to play said games and may not have a robust enough internet infrastructure. Though while it's easy to scoff at this argument in going "well the equipment they use at the games probably cost more than my machine", a lot of people can build up their athletic skills without the expensive, top-of-the-line equipment. EDIT: Also companies give athletes the equipment as part of being a sponsor. It could open up the argument for other competitive games that are not generally considered "sports" to be included, like I dunno, chess. Or even some that are considered sports but are never part of the Olympics, like car racing. There's already too many effing games. -

It's an interesting new "spectacle" no doubt, but the term "esports" was just terrible from the start.

This is when I like to point out Poetry used to be in the Olympics, and this makes far more sense.

Yup. To me "esports" it is as strange as a noun to use to describe video games as "board sports" would be for chess.

Thiback reacted to Sauron in Paris is considering eSports for the 2024 Olympics
Ehhh... and what game would they play? 50$ says it's league of legends, which I find depressingly boring to watch - and which is completely incomprehensible for someone who has never played a multiplayer videogame in their life. Every other sport in the olympics is pretty self explanatory, at least to the point where the audience has some idea what's going on even if they've never played that sport themselves.
What will they play 16 years from now? I don't think the olympic model fits esports at all. Athletics have been around for centuries, even the least conventional sports like ping-pong and curling have quite some history and seem like they're here to stay. Videogames on the other hand come in and go out of fashion. 15 years ago Quake 3 was all the rage, now there almost isn't an audience for it anymore. They can't change game every 4 years, can they?
Leave esports to their own dedicated tournaments, it's not like the big ones need a boost anyway. People who care still get amazing games very often, and unlike "conventional" sports the players don't even need to be in the same place to compete.

There are many physical sports that are on the waiting list. Esport will be at the bottom of the pile.
Unless there will be the summer Olympics, winter Olympics, and Electronic Olympics.

But why Microsoft?
Source: Ars Technica UK, Microsoft (Windows Blog)
But why? I thought Windows XP is already unsupported? Wouldn't that hurt Microsoft more?
You think that Microsoft is doing this for the benefit of their customers, I beg to differ. I see this as indecisiveness. Apple is true to their word when they declare a device to be unsupported. Here's a commentary from Peter Bright from Ars Technica as well:
Not to mention, they're not doing their latest OS Windows 10 any favors. Windows XP is a 32-bit operating system released in 2001 and it makes no sense at the moment to keep patching it. Just look at Apple, when they decide to stop supporting an OS or an old device, they do. Do you see Apple still releasing patches for an old iPhone 3GS or a 2008 polycarbonate MacBook running Mac OS X Snow Leopard at the latest? No.

Windows Store exclusive.

Thiback reacted to GoodBytes in Logitech releases 2 new Mouses - MX Master 2S and MX Anywhere 2S - 4,000DPI, 70 day battery life, multi-colored
Logitech has just released 2 new mouses which are updates over the older models.
The first mouse is the Logitech MX Master 2S. Available in black, dark teal and whitish color (called: Light Gray), it retains everything from the original MX Master, but features an updated Logitech Darkfield High Precision sensor which brings the mouse from 1,000 DPI to a variable 200 to 4,000 DPI, with 50 DPI increments, a feature that gamer mouse enjoyed. The battery, powered as always, with a Lithium-ion battery, features super fast charging. Logitech claims 3min of charge results in 70 days of usage (probably a few hours of day usage). The old mouse features a battery life of 30 days as per Logitech claims.
As before, it still features the auto-shift scroll wheel. Where the scroll wheel can switch from clicking to free spin for fast scrolling and not tiring your finger as you scroll, with a motor doing the switch based on the flick strength applied to the scroll wheel (adjustable in the settings), or switch mode at the press of a button.
The mouse supports Bluetooth and 2.4Ghz Logitech Unified Receiver, as the old model, and still features the 3 PC/device switch button at the bottom. And the mouse still has 7 buttons, no changes on that front.
Sadly, it doesn't us USB-Type for charging. It still uses micro-USB.
Different colors:
Midnight Teal:
Graphite:
Light Gray:
The other mouse is the mobile version of the MX Master 2S, called the MX Anywhere 2S.
It features the same 70 days claimed battery life as the full mouse, it features the same 200-4,000 DPI updated Logitech Dark Field sensor, and the same Lithium-Ion battery. It also works on Bluetooth and 2.4GHz Logitech Unified receiver.
In addition, new to the mouse, is that it has the same auto-switch scroll wheel modes as the its big brother. Before it was a manual switch. Now, the auto switch motor has been incorporated.
It is really the big brother, desktop mouse but made smaller for laptop. It does lose the side scroll wheel however.
As the other mouse, it is availible in the same colors:
Dark Teal:
Graphite:
And Light Gray:
The MX Master 2S retails with an MSRP of $99.99 US.
The MX Anywhere 2S retails with an MSRP of $79.99 US.

Source 2: http://www.logitech.com/en-us/product/mx-anywhere-2s-flow?crid=7
With the improved sensor, I feel like this mouse brings the mouse to be a more of a hybrid Productivity/Gaming 2-1 hybrid mouse, which I think is pretty cool. Of course, it isn't marketed as such. But for those who does productivity and gaming, but not a hard core gamer per se (a gamer that doesn't care about 60,000 DPI and pooling rates, nor RGB disco rave mode with lasers shooting on the sides, built-in fog machines, and cooling fan in it. :p), these 2 mouse are very interesting.
What do you think?
