nothing says the ram needs to be new. I'd just look around used to find some 4gb  8GB sticks

I would say if you can afford the 16GB of ram, I would go for it. 8GB these days is really cutting it for games. 16GB is gonna benefit you in most games, compared to 8.

I’ve got a wind force 970.  It had 2 issues.  One is the 970 isn’t a 4gb card it’s a 3.5gb card because the last half gb is almost unusable. Another is win10 has had problems with them. When I updated to win10 it literally turned my card off.

JonnyKennedy reacted to YoungBlade in HDD got weak sectors/currently pending sectors. should i worry?
First, you should always make sure that any data that matters to you is in more than one place - i.e. always have a backup. In that sense, if you don't have a backup, you should be worried, but SMART status doesn't really change that. Anyone who doesn't have a backup should be worried about their data.

I've certainly helped family members deal with failing hard drives. I've replaced drives in at least 5 laptops and I've worked to get as much data as I could back from them. In one case, with my mom, she unfortunately lost some photos. Thankfully, they weren't that important, but it could have been. This is why I try to tell everyone to have backups. However, their drives didn't simply have a few bad sectors. There were tons of SMART errors and the drives were clearly dying.

Over the years, I've actually used a two hard drives that had bad sectors, both of which operated fine for many years. The thing about bad sectors is that, if the drive doesn't try to read/write in that sector, it's as if the problem doesn't exist.

One of them had about a dozen bad sectors and it continues to work fine to this day. The firmware apparently avoids those sectors correctly, as I was able to even fill the whole drive with data with no problems. This drive came in a computer that originally belonged to my aunt. When I got it from her in 2009, it already had the bad sectors. I only retired the computer and drive in 2019. The bad sector count never increased and it never impacted what I did with the computer. The 120GB drive is now sitting in an external enclosure with some unimportant backup data on it.

The other drive was in my laptop. I forget the exact year, but around 2014, the computer would occasionally fail to boot into Ubuntu following kernel updates. Such updates change the bootloader files. I checked SMART and saw that I had bad sectors. I deduced that these sectors had to be near the start of the drive, as my install wasn't using much data. So, what I did was reinstall and partition the drive so that the first 32GB were not part of the OS. After that, no problems. I used the space as a storage partition for backup data, but otherwise didn't touch it. The drive still works to this day, although it is currently sitting in my desk drawer. The laptop was my daily driver, and in 2020 I swapped out the spinny boi for an SSD. But for around 5-7 years, I was using a drive with bad sectors in my primary laptop.

The point of this to say: always have a backup regardless, but don't be too afraid of bad sectors. It isn't like the whole drive is going to suddenly die. If the firmware is good, the drive will ignore those sectors by itself, and you'll never notice the problem. If the firmware is sub-par, then you can try to isolate those sectors and partition off that area.

If you don't have a backup, be worried, but not because of bad sectors. If the problem is just a few bad sectors, you'll probably be fine.

JonnyKennedy reacted to YoungBlade in Intel Core i9-12900K or Intel Core i7-12700K Boxed with DDR4
Personally, I don't think the i9 is worth the premium. You get 4 more E cores and a bit more frequency at stock, but that's pretty much it. Yes, you can use the cores, for what you're doing, but I think the extra money would be better spent elsewhere unless everything else is top of the line. For example, it could be spent on upgrading your RAM capacity, unless you were already planning on getting 32GB or more.

It really depends on the application. In compression work, for example, the extra bandwidth of DDR5 makes a big difference. But in most situations, it doesn't matter too much.

But to this point, if you are price sensitive, I would again point you to the 12700K, as it is a better value product. On top of the CPU price, you also won't need to spend extra on a high end liquid cooler.

JonnyKennedy reacted to Thunderzzu in New upgrade from Samsung Note 3
my honest opinion, as i've been in your same position 2 weeks ago:

If you're just a regular phone user, that takes pictures and does not use additional capabilities (like HDMI over type C, miracast, etcetc), go with the OP5. We also don't have it in Slovenia, so you'd have to order it via the web - my friends have done that a million times, and it's completely fine. It's the same with opting in for a warranty repair - you send it to their warehouse and they repair it, you don't need a local service centre.
If you're a more advanced user, go with the S8. The screen isn't as small as you'd think and it has basically every functionality that currently exists. Don't got for the S8+ unless money really isn't an issue for you.

Go for the iPhone only if you're dumb (1year warranty against 2years from both samsung and OP).

    Hope i helped!

I have everything enabled (wifi, 4g, bluetooth) and screen brightness at around 40-50% and at the end of the day i'm left with like 30%.
You have to count in that i spend most of my work time googling or messaging via my phone, so it's under constant use

The iPhone 8 is very uninspiring. It should've been called the iPhone 7s because that's what it basically is, but no. The S8 has my vote unless you're really settled in the iOS ecosystem.

All of the iphone 8's "NEW" features are on the Galaxy S6 and older.
Not to mention that an android phone isn't monopolized by a company that tries to find new ways to milk their customers with every iteration of their phone.
Example: removing the headphone jack to force people to buy/use an adapter.

The problem with the other mice is that they seem fishy (pun intended) so you either have the G402/M6900,  also more buttons and dpi =/= to better mouse. DPI rarely matters unless you have like 4 displays or something.

I would get the G402 since I had good experiences with it, however if you feel like its price premium is not worth it get the gigabyte it seems fine.

JonnyKennedy reacted to Analog in i5 vs i7
The i7 is a faster and overall better processor, because it has 8 threads. It is said that an i5 is better for gaming simply because only a very limited amount of games actually benefit from hypertreading, therefore, the extra cost is not justified. In many occasions it is actually better to have a processor with more cores rather than more threads. For example the last Tomb Rider does run with higher FPS when it is run on an i7 6-core, compared to an i5 or a mainstream i7 with 8 threads.
