WATERLOO —There were more than 10 million downloads of the BlackBerry BBM app for iPhone and Android devices in the first 24 hours it was available, the Waterloo-based company says.

 

It's the top Apple App Store free download in more than 75 countries, including the U.S., Canada and the U.K., according to an official company blog.

"We have also seen overwhelmingly positive reviews on Google Play and the App Store," Andrew Bocking, executive vice-president, BBM, said at http://blogs.blackberry.com/2013/10/bbm-24-hours-later/.

"In fact, BBM has earned 60,000 five-star reviews on Google Play from about 87,000 reviews."

 

The Globe and Mail also reports that Blackberry is processing new users at a rate of 500,000 an hour, with millions more queued up:

The company said more than 10 million people signed up for the BlackBerry Messenger service in the first 24 hours after its release on Monday for non-BlackBerry users. The company says it is processing new users at a rate of 500,000 an hour, with millions more queued up.
 

“We have absolutely incredible demand we’re trying to manage,” BlackBerry spokesman Jeff Gadway said. “We’re off to a really good start.”
 

The rush for the new BBM app is a welcome moment for the Waterloo, Ont., company, which has been clobbered by competitors in the smartphone market. The millions of new BBM users are in addition to the 60 million already using the service on their BlackBerrys.

BBM is not so much a "texting" platform as it is a data-based chat solution. It also doesn't go through the google messaging servers, instead through Blackberry's encrypted and controlled servers. In the experience I have with it so far on android, it takes the hassle out of picture messaging as they used to have a delay before I would get the picture, where as this just works. Also, for a privacy standpoint, it allows you to connect with someone you need to discuss things with without giving out your mobile number, as the BBM setup is associated to your BBM PIN and not your mobile telephone number.

Exactly, and they are already discussing rolling out a hangouts-style video chat feature which could make this the be-all-end-all messaging client for both ecosystems

for people who have nothing better to do, I suppose you are right. However, in my office (I work in the MIS dept for a furniture manufacturer) we use it as a way to keep company info secure, mainly just questions about practices and procedures but it does have a use other than for porn

I'm not downloading it because somethings fishy. Why will an almost bankrupt company pay to make an app for another platform and then release it for free. They are just loosing money over supporting it with updates while also their server costs which are going to skyrocket. Either theres a bigger hand at play here, or they are going to switch to a subscription model quite soon...
