I can confirm It is free, but @megadarkwood no you can no has because you need a mac to download it.

Probably because Windows 8.1 is free.

It's competition. Apple doesn't care, because Apple users switch system every generation, and sold their old ones at high price (price of the OS is with the system). Something you simply don't have on the PC side, because we know too much.

It's a free upgrade to Mountain Lion (10.8). I just finished updating and so far, it looks the same.

they might say "free" but it's technically priced into the hardware. why do you you think they charge so dam much? profit margins?... well, maybe some..... but it's because of the OS and software is now "free"

God do I f***ing hate it when people regard a PC as a Windows-based machine. It's one of those damn gripes that really gets me. A PC is a PERSONAL COMPUTER, not one that ONLY runs Windows. I mean seriously why are people so ignorant about not knowing a simple, two letter acronym?

Heh, this. Windows is crap anyway. Linux all the way. I have a dream, that one day, one will not have to use Windows to play the games they want.

It's only free on the Mac App store. If you have a mac, or have a friend that has a mac running 10.6 10.7 or 10.8 you can download Mavericks for free.
