Overclocking at 1.35v Okay?

I have a Haswell i7 5960x, with 32GB DDR4 Ram and a sophisiticated cooling system (4 radiators).  The typical overclock specs for this chip are 4.5Ghz at 1.3 voltz.  When I run my benchmark at those levels I run into instability problems.  However, if I increase the voltage to 1.35 I don't have any instability issues.  From my reading, the recommended voltage is 1.3v with most people saying they should never exceed 1.4v.  Occassionally I have read from forums never to exceed 1.3v and then occassionally I'll see someone posting they are at 1.33v or 1.35v, etc.  My temperatures never exceeded 60 degrees C. 

 

Do you think 1.35v is okay?

if your me yes, on a 5960x, your fine and you've got the custom cooling, your good

Your good with that. Don't go to 1.4V though

Its high, but if you have solid cooling then you should be fine.

Damn... there is a 5960X second hand here for "just" 900€ that runs 1.25V @ 4.5Ghz 24/7. Wish I bought it instead of a 980Ti which was just 100 less :P

 

That CPU will last for like 10 years if nothing important changes in CPU land like the last 5 years...

I might try to reduce voltage a few points.  I just went from 1.3 to 1.35 but I might try 1.34...then 1.33...1.32..., etc.

Low temps are better, but not a cure all.

 

Remember that, even with good cooling, the CPU is still dissipating more power as voltage increases.

 

Think of a simple visual - a 1500 watt heat gun coil.  Turned on in room air that thing will quickly glow red hot.  Place the same coil in a glacial stream and it might not change color at all - all that near freezing water flowing over it keeping it relatively cool.

 

But either way it is still dissipating 1500 watts of power.

 

Will the cooling extend it's lifespan? Maybe, maybe not.  And in the case of your CPU I really do not think we have the kind of data sufficient to predict what the lifespan will be.  Might last eight years, might start blue screening after five, might even be worse than that.

 

If I didn't need the added performance 24/7 I wouldn't run it at that OC 24/7.  If I did need it, I'd run it 24/7 but accept that a shorter lifespan might be an issue.

 

If I assumed I'd upgrade in 3-4 years I probably wouldn't worry a bit.

I wouldn't run 1.35v 24/7 personally. It won't fry immediately, but it will degrade the chip faster. If you can do 4.4 at 1.3v or less I'd accept that. Unless you absolutely need that small 100mhz increase.

this is all a personal comfort zone thing. Some ppl are comfortable running above 1.3, others wouldn't want to risk it.

The last couple of posts are correct. Unless you have a general need to run at 4.5 all day every day, then I suggest tuning it back to around 4.0 GHz. Your temps will be even lower and longevity will be less questionable.
