144Hz Gaming PC, X99

Hello guys,

I'm on stage of planning for my new PC, I have moved to States several weeks ago, and I need a new PC.

  • Budget: 2500$ for PC without peripherals
  • Location: Brooklyn, NY
  • Aim: high fps comfortable gaming without tradeoffs in performance; streaming; video editing; some heavy load parsing (CPU related stuff); multi-tasking
  • Monitors: 120-144Hz, 1440p, 27", IPS. One monitor at the beginning will be enough. I'm looking only on IPS matrix based solutions. Waiting for the option from ASUS. I tend to have 2 monitors in my disposal. For now I have only one option
  • Peripherals: I still need keyboard, but for now I would like concentrate only on PC. ;)
  • Main Idea: to have something powerful and silent :)

Check this out, what I have for now:

X99 Adoption

CPU: Intel Core i7-5820K 3.3GHz 6-Core Processor  ($299.99 @ Micro Center)
CPU Cooler: NZXT Kraken X61 106.1 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler  ($125.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Motherboard: Asus X99-A ATX LGA2011-3 Motherboard  ($239.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Video Card: MSI GeForce GTX 980 Ti 6GB Video Card  ($664.98 @ Newegg)
Case: Fractal Design Define S ATX Mid Tower Case  ($69.99 @ NCIX US)

Total: $2145.41

For now I have some concerns:

  • Video Card, which 980ti to select.
  • Memory, is my pick a good choice for X99 build?
  • Storage, is there any so fast options like from Intel?

I don't know about the h100i vs kraken question

EVGA is one of the best vendors. Some cards are way better than any other solution available

Also EVGA Hybrid is a liquid cooled card cooler and quieter(swap fans for better silence) and faster than strix

Also EVGA is nvidia's direct vendor i guess

Something like this? Unless you are going for a 5960X (899$ at Microcenter), X99 is not really worth it imo. What's the point in a X99 if you don't even have three or four GPU'S?

The Strix isn't really the greatest. OP is fine with the MSI one. The only 980Tis I'd recommend are the MSI, Zotac, and EVGA ones.

Hello guys,

...

For now I have some concerns:

  • Video Card, which 980ti to select.
  • Memory, is my pick a good choice for X99 build?
  • Storage, is there any so fast options like from Intel?

The performance differences between the top MSI, Gigabyte and EVGA GTX 980 Ti are quite small. Pick the one that has price and acoustical performance that fits your needs.

There are much better memory choices. Look for a 4x8GB kit of DDR4-2400 CL15 or better. If you want to explore the cost/benefit of various options read http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/intel-750-series-400gb-versus-samsung-sm951-512gb,4143.html.

The Samsung SM951 M.2 drive has benchmarked better than Intel 750 in some reviews and not as well in others. Samsung has just introduced an NVMe version which should do even better. http://www.techspot.com/review/989-samsung-sm951-pcie-ssd/page10.html

The H100i is not quieter than the X61, nor can it cool as well.

EVGA gpu are quite good.

I'm pretty sure OP wants a 144hz gaming PC, it says in the title, those useless ssd's and 5820K's make no sense.

I simply answered the OP's questions.

While the title mentions 144Hz gaming, the OP says "Aim: high fps comfortable gaming without tradeoffs in performance; streaming; video editing; some heavy load parsing (CPU related stuff); multi-tasking". Which suggests that X99 is in fact an appropriate platform. Streaming and video editing perform better with high speed storage.

He isn't making Hollywood videos you know. Go watch Linus or other reviews of the Intel 750 it basically useless for consumer grade PC's it's only for servers.

I'm loading and editing 6K video files from a HDD without any problem.

Is it so hard to do the math? If a HDD read speed is 150MB/s it means it can handle 1200Mb/s videobitrate. There is no camera in this world that can shoot that high bitrate. The Red Epic Dragon raw-uncompressed files I have tried are 600-700Mb/S. Just to give you an example, YouTube 4K bitrate is 20Mb/s and 1080P bluray's are about 50Mb/s.

Also, video's are rendered ON THE GPU these days. It takes 30 minutes to render a 1 minute 4K video on my CPU, and only 2 minutes on my 980TI. Having a good CPU is a myth for video-editing. I'm using a 5 year old I5 760 and those 6K uncompressed files play back in real time at 100% resolution without any problem. So only thing you need for video-editing is a good GPU for playbacking the video and for rendering it with OpenGL and 16GB of ram. You can try to use 8GB of ram, but you won't be able to buffer more the 5 seconds of 6K video.

Hope this clears things up...

Interestingly enough systems tend to do more than one thing at a time.

When one gets into special effects cpu power can make a big difference. Just because one is not working in Hollywood does not mean one is not doing shatters and other complex effects. Not all of this sort of work is done using the gpu.

But what I really do not understand is your objection to my answering the questions posed by the OP.

Because two 980Ti can easily fit in a 2500$ build. Best part is that his budget doesn't include peripherals which are another 1000$ (800$ for the Acer XB270HU)

What's wrong with a 6700K which has hyperthreading for workstation-loads? Are we limited to only hexa-cores now for everything?

TheConverter, thank you for your idea about Z170 Chipset, but I'm not interested in it.

Trust me, I know how to heavy load CPU (whatever I will have), and I'm type of the person, which would like to have 3.1 sec compilation time, that is only 2 sec faster for example ;)

Also there is a statement in the topic title, that I would like to go with X99 chipset. ;)

If you have good ideas about components that could be swapped in my current build, I will be grateful.

And if we are talking about 2000 MB/s drives, I just would like to have such experience to build my own opinion for it ;)

Question:

If I want to have frontal intake in Define S with Kraken, does it fit ok?
