[MINI NEWS] Last Minute Updates From MS About Windows 10 Upgrade Process

Master Disaster

So MS have updated the Windows 10 upgrade FAQ with some new information which I thought I'd round up and share

1) You must have either 7 SP1 or 8.1 to upgrade to 10. Users of 8.0 are not eligible.

We'd guessed this but they've now confirmed it

2) Reserving your upgrade should mean you get it quicker than those who don't reserve.

It looks like they're doing reservations starting June 29th, once the reservations are all out of the way they will move onto everyone else, they even list none reserved upgrades as early August on the FAQ now.

3) You'll lose Media Centre but if you have MC then you'll get a free DVD Playback Application.

This was a large worry for a lot of users as they use MC to playback DVDs, seems like MS have listened and will now be providing users with Media Centre installed on their systems at upgrade time with a free DVD Playback app.

4) Its official, upgrading your system to 10 will upgrade your key meaning you can clean install 10 after the fact.

Again this was already pretty common knowledge, I'd been told this by some MS Community guys in the Windows 10 Q&A but this is now official and straight from the horses mouth (as it were). You will have to upgrade your system from 7 or 8.1 to 10 to get your key, once you've got your key you can use it as you can any other Windows key including clean install from an ISO.

5) Despite the rumours flying around Windows 10 devices will go on sale July 29th (tomorrow)

Yup, the rumours were not true, Stores will be selling brand new systems preloaded with Windows 10 starting tomorrow.

Nothing hugely revolutionary in here, just confirms for stuff we already knew but its good to have it official.

OK so that's all folks, its 24 hours away now (give or take) and I'm excited to see what tomorrow brings. Happy upgrade day for tomorrow everyone.

I wonder how much compatiblity will break.... I'll probs offload all my shit to my HDD's and do a clean install.

Also, what happens to OEM recovery partitions? My moms laptop and my old desktop have a recovery partition, will that get upgraded to Win10 or do I have to reinstall Win7 everytime I want to clean the install?

Reddit SW swap?

I don't think they give out the ISO's though, they only trade the keys right?

I just need a place to download it safely, now that MS stopped hosting themselves.

The recovery partition will be upgraded to Windows 10 as well. However, I don't know for Windows 7, as there was no standard way for this, like Windows 8 have.

I suspect that the recovery partition won't be upgraded to work with Windows 10 seeing as most OEMs ship custom installers that install older drivers and trial versions of older software. My recommendation would be to install Windows 10, create clean install media for them and then delete the recovery partition to give them more storage space on their systems.

Damn. I feared this. Well I'll image the Recovery partitions so I have them at hand anyway. But then I'll just delete them as soon as I'm upgraded and make some recovery drives instead.

Install without a key, then use the "anytime upgrade" with your Pro key?

I am kind of tempted to try upgrading a pirated version of Windows 7 in a VM. I wonder if it will just spit out a legit key. If it does then this is a great opportunity to convert a lot of pirates.

Well they said that it will remain non-genuine.

Techradar seems to think that it will be timezone specific - http://www.techradar.com/au/news/software/operating-systems/windows-10-launch-live-blog--1300327

I suppose we will find out very soon.

I am talking about a pirated Windows 7 version that has an SLIC injected into memory before boot. It appears genuine to WAT.

Well, say, if I have an OEM copy of windows, and I have no idea what the key is, how will I remain on windows 10 if I need a fresh install or something? Will they give us a new key once we upgrade, or does it upgrade the original key?

I'm also thinking of getting a pirated version of W7 pro and upgrading to W10 pro so that I don't have to deal with Windows Update.

This is a signature.

Idk, but I think it's in system properties in control panel, but that's the product ID.

It will stay Windows 7 if it doesn't overwrite them :)
