Why don't I feel like playing through campaigns/story in games anymore?

ManOfDisguise

I used to love games with a great story but as time goes I find myself to be less and less patient with singleplayer games. I dont think I can play Singleplayer only games that are, say longer than a couple hours all the way through anymore. I played Brothers A Tale of Two Sons some months ago and that game was AMAZING one of the best games i ever played and the length was not too long(3h) and it was a really unique game so I played it through all the way no regrets. But I think games that are longer than this I just dont feel like bothering with anymore. And most gamers, including me in the past consider, say a 6 hour long story to be still short.

I don't know what it is that makes me not want to play them through anymore :/. I play games that are focused on free roam or creating something or just MP games more now.

Am I just not that into gaming anymore I guess? Or just not into scripted stories anymore? Does this happen to you?

Also, do you finish all your singleplayer games that you play?

Yeah, most of the single players are disappointing since there is more money in the multiplayer.

I haven't finished half of the (new) CoD campaigns, since most are kinda let downs..

Free roam like single players are fun though, like Skyrim.

And if I like a game a lot, I play it a lot. Including single players

It may be a problem with your attention span slipping, or being too impatient for pay-off.

To best appreciate games you need a patient, child-like approach. That doesn't mean you switch off your intellect, it means you lose yourself in the wonder of a fictional world.

That's just me anyway. When I player a good story driven single player game I am reminded why I love games in the first place. Free roam games just don't have that same pacing, consistently high quality or emotional weight for me. It's a nice thing to use as a marketing slogan and an impressive technical feat.

I've had the same thing going on for a few years now. I think it mostly has to do with time. As a kid I had basically infinite time to sit down and enjoy a game. Now I have to enjoy games in short bursts. Story intensive games aren't really conducive to that play style, so I've shifted from story driven RPGs to more pick up and play kinds of games like action platformers and Rogue-likes. Playing a long story driven RPG is hard for me now, and I usually stop half way through anyway. I even skip the story on most games that I replay now simply because I can't be bothered with it.

Games that take FOREVER to give you control of your character also infuriate me to no end. I didn't play this game to be given exposition and watch cutscenes, I played it to play the game. This is made even worse by absurd amounts of early game hand-holding and tutorial missions in modern games.

tl;dr: I'm mad because every game isn't Symphony of the Night

I still enjoy 10-20 hour games but don't have as much time for them as I used to so I enjoy it when a shorter game comes round but I must say I think episodic games bridge that gap nicely. I really liked the way Alan Wake and Tell Tale games Walking Dead were put together, you get ~2 hour chunks at a time but it is nice to start after a season has been released so you don't have a month or so between episodes.

My go to is definitely multiplayer though, the main thing for me is I don't feel like I'm locked into a 2+ hour session (even though when I do sit down and play 2-3 hours isn't uncommon), with multiplayer I'm happy to up and leave whenever I need but with single player I feel like I have to wait for the next chapter or a good transition point.

Linear games have just become boring in the last few years. there are exceptions though.

Tried wolfenstein the new order and I didn't really get hooked. Then I gave a last shot and after a while it started to grow on me. I was really sad when it ended. Could be the case with a lot of games!

It looks to be an awesome game, sadly I dont have the money to get it, but if I can I might eventually get it. By the way have you played Brothers A Tale Of Two Sons? it is a truly unique experience and may well be one of the best singleplayer experiences one can have. It's even TotalBiscuit's favorite game of all the games he has ever played

because dev split there time and effort like 30:70 these days in terms of % into campaign or multiplier. multiplayer is what gives most (not all) games their longevity. once you've played the big guns such as COD or BF single player and completed it theres nothing to go back to.. multiplayer is different each time.. all of this is obviously in its crudest sense.

Honestly I think its alot closer to 10:90, campaign isnt gonna be the selling point anymore

I don't care for story based game at all.  I find it a real chore.  Destiny on PS4 I hammered and the first 20 levels you need to get up are done mostly through the "story" missions which bored me to tears.

I'm only really interested in multiplayer games tbh.

For me it comes and goes. At first like ~12 years ago I used to only play singleplayer games and in few years that turned in to MMOs because they were new and exciting for me. Games like SWG,WoW, LOTRO. For few years now I'm mostly back in to the singleplayer/story games and even got into grand strategy games like Crusader Kings 2, EU4 and I used to hate these type of games!

Usually I like games with multiple endings, makes me want to retry the game. 1 ending for me is just boring, I don't know why.... Everything we've done will just lead to that ending.
