Wanting to get into 1440p.

I Hendrycks I

Hey, so atm I have a gtx660ti and it's running two monitors great right now. My main is an Acer 24" 120hz, 1080p monitor and the other is a super old 1680x1050 Samsung 22" TV.

I always game on the Acer but have some type of media (youtube, twitch, etc) or I'm streaming (sometimes two things at the same time on half the TV each) running on the Samsung. I get amazing FPS on every game I play doing this other than on TW: Attila and Dying Light which is what's making me skeptical on if my GPU will hold up to a 1440p display.

So my question is if I get a 1440p 144hz monitor I'll be having it as my gaming display and my current 1080p monitor for media consumption. Will my one 660ti be able to handle all of this or will it be a terrible experience?

Right now I'm looking to spend around ~$650 so I don't think I can buy a new GPU and monitor right now. The problem I'm in is that if I buy a monitor I need a new GPU but if I just buy a GPU I don't really get any performance increase as I'm already playing games at good FPS with my 660ti.

Any helps appreciated, thanks!

For a 144Hz 1440p I would usually recommend at least a GTX 770 or R9 290 with 4GB of VRAM.

R9 290s came down in price a lot, so you might actually be able to get a nice monitor and graphics card.

Dying Light makes 980s stutter if you aren't meticulous about the graphics settings, so I wouldn't use it as any kind of metric.

For 1440p though, I would recommend a 290X or a 970, whichever is cheaper. For 1440p 144 hz I would recommend two of them.

Just back of an envelope calculation involving just GPU power alone:

1440p at 144 fps is 530,841,600 pixels per second.

4K at 60 fps is 497,664,000 pixels per second.

Something to consider.

You'll probably run into some memory bottlenecks with only 2GB vram. If 1440p is where you want to go I would pick up at least a GTX 970 or R9 290x (or blow your whole budget on a GTX 980) and save for a monitor.

Most 1440p 144 hz monitors are going to cost you close to $800+ with the ROG Swift being the only one out now. If you wait a month the Acer XB270HU will be out with it's IPS 144hz G-sync goodness. Also coming this year that I can remember off the top of my head:

  • Acer XG270HU TN Film 144Hz free-sync
  • Asus MG279Q IPS 120Hz free-sync

All depends on whether you go red or green...

Thanks for all the replies so far!

I was looking at getting a GTX 970 but I would get buyer's remorse because I then can't get a new monitor to actually make the GPU work.

Would going for one ultrawide be easier on my GPU? I think I'd actually prefer having an amazing gaming experience on one big display and deal with not being able to consume media at the same time. What are some of the notable ultrawide monitors priced at?

EDIT: I've been team Green for a while now, my case is also a Cooler Master Nvidia Edition so it'd be silly to have an AMD card in it aha

You want ultrawide 2560x1080 (1080p variant) or 3440x1440 (1440p variant)?

The 2560x1080 variant would be about 30% harder to run than 1920x1080. Popular monitors include:

  • LG 25UM65
  • Asus MX299Q
  • AOC Q2963PM

If you want 3440x1440p you would need slightly more power than even standard 2560x1440p.

For gaming, a 660ti will not be able to run a 1440p monitor. However if you temporarily switch your plan and use the 1440p display for media consumption and the 1080p display for gaming you could hold off until you get a new GPU.

You could go with the plan I stated above if finances are an issue. As for ultrawide monitors, a 1080p ultrawide will be slightly easier for a 660ti to run than a full 1440p display but still may be pushing the limits of your GPU.

1080p ultrawides run about $250-$500+. Keep in mind that most (if not all) will be IPS which means they will have a refresh rate of 60Hz.

I've built 3 PC's, but none for myself... In fact, I'm using an iMac that my dad bought for me as my desktop. Awkward...

Please don't say "SSD drive." By doing so, you are literally saying "Solid State Drive Drive" and causing my brain cells to commit suicide. The same applies to HDD (Hard Disk Drive) and PCIe (Peripheral Component Interconnect Express).

It seems like it's too out of reach for me at present. I know I want to stick to 120hz+ because I can't stand 60hz monitors anymore. I assume I'd feel the same way with 1080p if I was to go with 1440p or an ultrawide.

Are their any good 144hz 1080p monitors for a decent price?

Asus VG248QE is a solid choice.

If you want to swing extra for G-sync the BenQ XL2420G has gotten great reviews

The Asus looks good but is the extra cost really worth it for G-Sync on the BenQ? I'm also wondering if the jump from 120hz to 140hz is as noticeable as 60 to 120hz is?

I have limited hands-on with G-sync but it is as good as they say. It really shines though when your frames drop between 40-60fps. May be worth it if thats the case. Whether it's worth the premium is up to opinion.

The Hz/fps debate is also up to opinion, but I notice a difference in smoothness between 60 and 120hz. 120 to 140hz i wouldn't think would be that much of a difference.

I was going to do this myself.. I was wanting a 32" wqhd monitor....

After I started researching 32" monitors for a couple days there just isnt that much out that at a decent price... And the 3 I were interested in have issues when running games, I'm thinking its driver issues..  But the 3 models I was looking at, Samsung, BenQ, and Acer, all them were having screen flickering problems.. All were in the $600-$650 range and all of them having the same issue..
