AMD is firing shots

OhNoesItsDobby

If the 300 series wasn't around the corner I would buy a 290x over a 970 all day everyday. I'm not paying nearly $100 more for equal/less performance lmao

Since when was the 290X ever faster than the 970?

Amd could drop the 290X price to 250 and people still wouldn't buy it.

That's ridiculous. When they had the big price drops to ~$250 on the R9 290's throughout November they sold extremely well and lots of models were sold out at newegg while the 970s became a lot easier to find. Though once they brought prices up in December to ~$280 things switched and the 970s started becoming harder to find in stock again at newegg.

What do you mean m8? Since always at 4k (remember this was back in September, AMD drivers are a lot better now)

I really hate when you guys quote non overclocked numbers. The 970 goes from its stock boost of 13xx to 15xx and 7200 to 8000 effective memory with ease.

Okay? Like I said the AMD drivers have improved so the performance difference will be even higher, and you can overclock AMD cards as well...

RIP in pepperonis m8s

Nobody is really gaming at 4K, are they?

Both the 290X and 970 have their place.  The 970 is a better card....slightly.

Sure they have. Show me some proof of these driver improvements

They are better off improving their thermal design and reducing heat.

Thats what makes amd special

Any means of getting gpu power

Easy overclock

Screw the heat screw the electriciy power is everything

We are far too easily pleased.”

Don't buy for now.  Our dollar is at like a 20 year low.

Yeah, it sucks that it is, but we have had a pretty decent run over the last few years, just typical that when I am in the market for a new GPU, the prices are still sky-high here!!!!!

Yeah I never subscribed to the whole "Let's wait for the next new card" way of thinking. What if the 3xx sucks?

good point, the new card might not be exactly what its cracked up to be ... or quoted to be, you know, specs being stated that are not entirely true .... not that anyone would do that, would they?????

Its a double edged sword for AMD, do they compete with the 900 series efficiency or its performance? I'd like to think both, but given the 290 & 290x's thermals i doubt it. It would just be nice for the competition to be closer.

If the price is right, buyers can deal with any extra heat, or power requirement of the AMD GPUs.

This , heck , even the 290x is looking good right now. C'mon AMD release the 3xx series , i can't keep on waiting on my 670 :P

I think if anything nvidia should drop the prices on the gtx 980 for a bit for anybody who wants to refund and get a 980 instead

Well to do that you need lower power consumption which isn't AMD's forte lol. That said on models of the 290/290X where the heatsink is properly designed for it rather than just copypasta from another GPU (*cough* ASUS DCII *cough*) it stays really cool. It's actually difficult to get an R9 290X Vapor-X from Sapphire to pass 60C unless you turn the fan speed down really low

Also on the topic of the marketing slogan on AMD, it's a double win. Anyone who doesn't already know about "VRAM Gate" who runs into this "4GB means 4GB" will probably look it up and find out about it. This is amusing

While i dont have a 290x , my 270x from MSI is the coolest cards i have ever owned.

So the whole heat myth for AMD GPUS never made sense for me.

Never got that joke .

Well on average they do generate more heat because they consume more power than their rival Nvidia cards. But as long as the cooler is properly designed, the card should have no problem keeping itself cool so you don't need to worry about super high fan speed or OC headroom.

Being in the UK, unfortunately the price drop over here proportionally isn't nearly as big as in the US, apparently. Since my MSI 970 is being collected for an RMA + refund on monday (excess noise), I'll be replacing it, and my options are a 290X for £270, or another 970, probably the Asus Strix, for £300. AMD's offer is tempting, but the drop still isn't quite enough to sway me.

Not in this pricepoint , consumes the same as a 660.

However the 750 ti and 960 consume less.
