Tips for smooth video?

Gershy13

Hey Guys!

Can someone help me?

I have the Canon 650d (Rebel t4i)

And i would like to record some video, kinda like b-roll of a product but its very shaky!

how do people like Linus, Austin, Jayztwocents, Marques do it?

i dont have a slider... but i have seen people doing it without a slider!

I do have a tripod tho...

also i have AfterEffects and Premiere (maybe some plugins?)

The lens is the EFS 18-55mm normal lens.

Can someone help?

Thanks

Gershy13

SNIP

For smooth video you generally need equipment that can help keep things steady

For panning/tilting - a fluid head

for sliding shots - a slider or dolly (or crane)

for walking around video - at least a stabilized lens, but preferable a rig, stabilizer or gimbal

If you only have a basic tripod and a kit lens, getting smooth moving video will be extremely difficult, try and keep shots static or be extremely slow and careful with the tripid (if its not a fluid head)

My lens apparently has Canon IS 2, but its not like the OIS i see on phones and some cameras!

but that will still take a long time!

Yeah, you need a slider to get those kinds of shots.

You could always look into doing one yourself with some PVC piping.

If you want smoother panning, you could tie something long onto your tripod to reduce the sensitivity to movement. ie you'd have to move the thing a greater distance for the same change in angle.

I have seen people do decent sliding shots using only their regular tripods. It will be harder to do than with a real slider, but it might be good enough for the time being.

(Tips number 2 - 1 minute and 10 seconds in)

and here is another video showing it:

@Gershy13

Get a skate dolly (or just stick the camera on something like a skateboard).

Something like this: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/SALE-25-mini-ball-head-plus-Table-Dolly-Skate-slider-DSLR-Camera-video-tripod-/111466608709?pt=AU_Cameras_Photographic_Accessories&hash=item19f3ed7845

Is very cheap, and you can attach articulating arms or just the camera.  And the wheels move independently so you can get sweet 360 degree shot.

Both Linus and Marques use video rigs worth tens of thousands of dollars.

To get the smooth pans you'll need a fluid head tripod.

*warning* do not be fooled by products that say "fluid-like head".

To get that left to right movement, you'll want a slider.

Budget equipment starts at around $150. You can make DIY kits yourself if you'd like as others have already posted.

A good trick is to film in 60fps and slow it down, utilizing slow motion for b-roll type shots. It really helps smooth out the shakiness.

You will need to get a fluid head (and a heavy tripod that can provide its own balance and avoid being "tugged" when you pan for a shot).

Barring that, you can get one of these. Handheld 3 axis stabilization for a lot of cameras, it can fit a A7S it can withstand a Canon 650D as well.
