How Much Does HDD Cache Matter?

EarthboundHero

So I was wondering what the performance difference would be like between an HDD with 32 and 64MB of cache. Also are Toshiba drives any good?

Not really. And Toshiba is OK, would recommend WD or Seagate though.

My mass storage drive has 64MB of cache and while it's fine for games and stuff, there are instances where it takes longer than I'd want when loading a folder with lots of files like images or video. HDDs will always be slower than SSD so I'm not sure the cache makes as big a difference as some people would hope. If the price diff isn't that diff, I'd just go with whatever has more cache for the peace of mind. As for Toshiba quality, never used their drives. I'm more a WD user.

Seagate Barracuda if you want 7200 rpm, otherwise WD Green.

I say your best bet is trying to grab a WD or Seagate drive for Black Friday prices. :)

Nah, I would recommend Seagate all around. WD isn't all that great.

Current Rig: Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600, Abit IN9-32MAX nForce 680i board, Galaxy GT610 1GB DDR3 gpu, Cooler Master Mystique 632S Full ATX case, 1 2TB Seagate Barracuda SATA and 1x200gb Maxtor SATA drives, 1 LG SATA DVD drive, Windows 10. All currently runs like shit :D

Yep, my barracuda has been going for 13756 hours and still works perfectly.

EDIT: a quick crystaldiskinfo check reveals that there is some re-allocated sectors.

Modern operating systems basically use every byte of system memory for caching that is not used by an application. So HDD cache does not matter that much.
