EVGA GTX 970 Faulty Design

Skaterolly

It seems over at eteknix they have seen that evga have f*cked up.

"The images of the new card and its cooler suggest that they’ve used the cooler from a bigger card to save on manufacturing costs; the problem here being that one of the three heat-pipes barely makes any contact with the GPU. Rival cards are out pacing the EVGA card in the cooling department and it’s likely that the card could be performing better in benchmarks if the cooler was used to its full potential."

@Skaterolly
Doesn't seem to be getting "outpaced" in the techpowerup review

rQT6HpL.png

I mean being 2° C away from Asus' premium silence and cooling optimized STRIX branded GTX 970 either means they both suck balls or that they're both fine.

And if you want ultimate performance there's always Gigabyte's G(olden)1 which beats reference cooler temps by 18°C  in the Guru3D review vs the 7-9°C difference seen from reference to aftermarket on the STRIX and ACX in the above Techpowerup review.

HAHA not COOL

Get it? Coz they fucked up the position of the heatpipes? So it doesn't get COOLED as well as it should?

ok, I'm going to bed now..

Didn't ASUS do the exaxt same thing with their DCUII R9 290? One would think manufacturers would be able to learn from eachothers mistakes..

I hope that this thread wasn't created to say NVIDIA sucks. The OP is using an AMD GPU, despite the fact that this may be true, I'm kinda wondering if this just being used to put a black mark, so to speak, against NVIDIA despite only EVGA being mention. I'm not a fanboy, in case you're going to suggest that, I'm just making an observation. But I could be wrong, and if I am I sincerely apologise.

are they? I mean they have smaller TDP than 980 (what it was designed for) and there is only a small heatpipe, that could cover the heat difference between the 980/970, and as tests shows, it might be plausible

I love MSI's cooler design, and it seems to perform good also.

Well thanks goodness I both cant afford the new cards and don't like EVGA's coolers after the 680.

What do they know of England, who only England know?

Im sure EVGA are aware of this, and Perhaps they feel it worked good enough and kept the GPU cool enough so the 3rd heatpipe being close didnt really matter?? meh. Either way Gigbyte Gaming G1 is the Obvious leader of the Pack

The EVGA GTX 760 ACX cards also had this same "problem". they also ran 3 heat pipes with the smaller not even touching the core. When i took my coolers off to fit waterblocks i noticed the same thing. I even mentioned it on the evga forums and noone said boo about it.

Come to think of it. That 970 heatsink looks almost identical on the underside as the 760's cooler. hmm

Anyway i bought a MSI GTX970 gaming 4G today. it's amazing, i can play BF4 on ultra and the fans wont even spin up it so chilly :P

These new GPUs produce a lot less heat than the previous generation. Even though not all the heat pipes are perfectly in contact with the die, it still provides more than sufficient cooling. So there's really nothing to complain about.

With Asus and their DCUII problem on the R9 290/X's it was a much bigger problem because those chips produce A LOT more heat. It's just simply not an issue with Maxwell. Go look at the actual numbers.

Does this mean I should return my EVGA 970 ACX 1.0 and go for something like MSI? (Asus 970s are not available in my area)
