USB Type-C Connector Finalized. Reversable USB.

GoodBytes

The USB Promoter Group announces today, that Type-C connector is now finalized.

The goal of Type-C connector is to replace all other type of current USB connectors, and is reversible.

Final_USB-Type-C-rendering_with-labels.j

They say that the size is similar to Type-B, and is also said to be robust for implementation into laptops and tablets.

Type-C is compatible with the new USB 3.1, which passes from 5Gbps of USB 3.0 to 10Gbps and that supports delivery of up to 100W of power, theoretically.

According to the USB-IF's press release (PDF), the new connector is "similar in size" to current micro USB 2.0 Type-B connectors (the ones you use for most non-Apple phones and tablets). It is designed to be "robust enough for laptops and tablets" and "slim enough for mobile phones." The openings for the connector measure roughly 8.4mm by 2.6mm.

[...]

The new Type-C plug will be compatible with USB 3.1, a revised version of the spec that boosts theoretical transfer speeds from the 5Gbps of USB 3.0 to 10Gbps and that supports delivery of up to 100W of power using the USB Power Delivery spec.

Can't say how happy I am to see this at long last.

100W of power? So you could techincally drive and power an LCD display with one of these?

Was a non-reversable connector this difficult to use?

Something tells me Linus will not like this :P Although it does seem to have a lot of potential and i personally don't mind smaller connectors.

why would he not like it?

It was a PITA man, especially micro USB where you have to inspect the end of it to know which way round it is before charging your phone.

I can't tell from the images but the connector looks really small and it seems like it could be fragile much like the Micro USB. Obviously that isn't the case if the connector is larger.

I just keep jabbing them in until they fit. And I know which direction the ports are (other than on my phone, but it's... No), so I guess it isn't a problem for me.

One problem I have with this is that the metal connector part looks too short compared to the plastic covered part. Looks like it'll fall out REALLY easily. Hopefully they implement some sort of locking mechanism.

Confused.  You can just detach the connector and attach whatever one you need?

Everything under the cable is for manufacturers.  It's just different positions to solder it to your motherboard.

No matter what I did with the old connector I would have to reverse its direction twice. Every damn time.

Pretty happy to see its reversible and the 100w power capability is a huge plus. powered monitors, powered full sized external drives, you name it.

This is interesting to see that this type of connector being closer to completion. But I have seen unofficial double sided USB connectors from China retailers.

The point of this is what? just make full size USB reversible then everyone is happy. Small connectors like this is silly because its still fiddly and you have a massive cable on it any way. yeah its good for small devices but you can put full size USB on phones and tablets anyway.

Reversible

All the benefits of USB (MHL, used everywhere etc).

100W

Small

10Gbps bandwidth.

Backwards compatible (I hope).

Sounds like it will be more robust than micro USB 2.0.

Sounds like a great connector. I don't think I can find a single thing wrong about it.

USB 3.1 full size has not been released yet why do the small fiddly thing first and 100W of power I don't think so if its on a MoBo it will need its own connector some processors only use 100W no matter 100W through USB 3.1 maybe to charge your phone through pc than that's reasonable but you can do that already
