Should I upgrade CPU and GPU or get a higher end GPU

Go to solution Solved by 7850OC,

focus on the gpu (and get the best you can buy)

I am wanting to upgrade my gaming computer but I am on a budget. My options are buying an AMD FX 8320 and a Sapphire Dual-X R9 270 or just buying a Sapphire Dual-X R9 280. Can anyone give me suggestions on which I should choose?

Just buy your gpu first and when you have enough money, then buy you cpu.

Get a r9 270x or r9 280 and a amd fx 8350.

ZacDaMan72 I didn't see much reason to go for the x models and spend the extra cost of doing so.

I've got a similar build (my cpu is clocked higher though) and am enjoying this R9 270X, i can run the likes of FarCry 3, Metro 2033/Last Light, Witcher 2 & Hitman Absolution maxed out.

I'd personally say get the FX-8320 and save up for an R9 280X.

Fulgrim So are you saying buy a processor and not a graphics card or buy both and buy the 280 later?

Question, how does your current cpu compare to an A10 FM2 5700 APU? If it's about the same then I'd say upgrade the CPU/mobo.

I say this because I went from that APU(the 5700) and a GTX 660, to a new mobo and cpu (z97/4690k) with the same graphics card; and the difference in games has been quite big, and not just in load times either. I now notice little to no screen tearing at all with vsync and triple buffering. I know most people will say that it's unlikely to be a difference in game, but I really have noticed a huge difference, no more lagging/slowing down when stuff gets really crazy in game (single player, harder to account for  online).

I'm no expert by any means, just going with what I've experienced myself.

GUI is better than Command Line Interface.

That was my thought process I just wanted to see what other people thought I love my processor and I have it stable oc to 3.7GHz so I am definitely leaning towards the beefier gpu

Agreed. Get the R9 280. Your CPU is fine and the non-x is a better bang for the buck

Uhm I wouldn't use the AMD FX 8320 because the am3 socket is getting laid of, that means no new that means no new cpus, so I would either go with a x4 760k(for the fm2 socket and upgrade later) or an i5. And if you are already thinking to get a r9 280X I would wait a bit  because the prices are sure to drop even further, because the new r9 285 is coming soon.

If you you're thinking of which will give you the most performance then getting the GPU will be the choice.

Ya that's what I seemed to have found in my research. Do you know of any really significant differences between the two that can not be achieved by an overclock or something like that

280X = 7970

280 = 7950

They're both practically the same core, overclock the 280 and get 280X speeds, you won't be missing out on anything.

The only reason I wouldn't want to go with something non AM3+ is I just bough my new motherboard and I don't have the money to buy a new one on a different socket

Okay thanks so now that whole internal dilemma is squashed :)

Pssst... get the HIS IceQ OC

I found the MSI Twin Frozr for $299.99 on NewEgg. I know the HIS IceQ OC is cheaper but it doesn't go with the black and red theme of my build can you see the blue from how it is oriented in the case (like through a side panel window)

Oh okay. I know someone with the Twin Frozr 280, it's okay but in terms of performance I'd pick the HIS. I had the same cooler on a 7870 and it was a beast.

Would any of the blue be visible through my case's side panel? If not I will definitely opt for that one

It wouldn't show from the cooler, but the card has a blue PCB.

My only thing is my rig has a black and red color scheme. Do you think the coloring would be significant enough to throw it off
