Sold working processor, now the guy says it doesn't work

Guest

I suspect PEBKAC.

About 2 weeks ago I sold a 9600k CPU that I had previously tested in my current rig, the CPU worked perfectly well. After I got done with my testing, I decided to sell it. It's dumb, I know, but that's what I did. I pulled it out of the socket and it put back in its plastic tray, and then back into the cardboard box. The guy came to pick it up, saying it'd take a week or two before he got the motherboard for it. I assured him that it works, because it does. It worked up until I shut off my PC and I pulled it out, there were no mishaps, it peacefully traveled from the socket to its box.

Fast forward to today, the guy insists that the CPU doesn't work. He tries to use it the CPU VGA (which I did not test) and it doesn't work, I told him to try with a discreet GPU and it still doesn't work. He's apparently using an ASUS ROG STRIX Z390-E, he RMA'd the first motherboard and now it still doesn't work with the second, so he seems to think it's the CPU's fault. He also says he tried a different PSU. He asked for the invoice and now he's saying he wants to bring it back here so I RMA with Newegg. I told him he can bring the PC and I'll look at it. That being said, I lost $50 on that CPU and I'm not interested in the hassle, I assume the guy assembled his thing incompetently, or straight up broke CPU or whatever else. I'm worried he's trying to swindle me in some way, although he doesn't seem to be the type.

I'm not sure how to proceed from here... Any warnings, suggestions?

This may be the type of person that would pull this kind of sh*t with any seller.  Big box store, online retailer, an individual.  However, some folks don't mind screwing over faceless corporations, but would draw the line with an individual.  Let him know you've tested the CPU and are positive it was in perfect condition when sold, but you're not equipped to handle "returns" and cannot accept his.  If he needs the initial proof of purchase then let him have that, but I wouldn't put yourself out there for much else if you are 100% certain you sold him a perfect CPU.

And if you need to meet up -- don't bring a weapon . . . bring a friend.  And meet someplace public.  I've met someone in a bank lobby before to sell some camera glass.

Yeah meet in public, and make sure that he lets you test the CPU before you do an RMA or refund him or anything.

first mistake was having him come to your house for something as small as a 200usd product, any used product should be as is, and you've already went above and beyond (too much imho), especially if you are sure that the cpu worked when u sold it. Never underestimate the power of human error and the denial that comes after, he mighta broke the cpu for all i know (cpus don't just break themselves). Louis Rossmann ran into something similar years back and his response for screens that "break themselves" was "suck it".

I've sold plenty of stuff in classifieds and they've always come to my place, from $10 to $2000. There's never been any problem. And I'm not particularly worried about him knowing where I live.

I am assuming they are local?

If the buyer is willing to bring his/her system to you, so you can help with some troubleshooting, then I don't see the harm in that.

But...I agree, you can help with process the RMA, but after that, it is all him/her.

When you sold it did you also sell your tech support?  Most used items are sold 'as is' unless otherwise stated.

Don't be this guys IT department, tell him to piss off.

Depending on where @Bynming purchased the CPU, since he is the original purchaser, the invoice will have his name and address.

He will have to go with the RMA process -- the used / second owner cannot.

It seems kind of odd that this person doesn't want to get...basically free tech support.

Do you still have a compatible motherboard?

Have him bring the CPU back...you can inspect it for user error (e.g. this person being a dumb ass), and test it right in front of him with a compatible motherboard.

If it works, then not the CPU's problem.

He lives something like 45 minutes away and didn't want to make the trip again. I filed for a RMA and gave him the prepaid shipping label, he contacted UPS and they picked up the CPU at his place. Tomorrow, Newegg will receive the CPU and they'll determine whether it's defective and send the replacement. I don't think this really exposes me to any issue. If it's defective they'll send a good one. If it works they'll just resend it to him and say it works. And if he broke it they'll say tough luck and resend the broken CPU, in which case I'll just say not my problem, I sold him a perfectly good CPU.

I mean if you come to me close enough with a 8700k I might steal it from you, and Im a nice guy imo,, not the greatest guy in the world,, but good enough guy.  Maybe this guy has been obsessing about a 8700k for a very long time and now you are his obsession.  Man this could be a lifetime movie channel film.  But in all honesty we want you to be alive,, so costco or gas station or starbucs or police station and what not.  But ya wtf CPU you going to get now that your selling this one. a 9900k ?

I got the 9600k pretty much just to get the PC running while I was waiting for the 9900k. In any case there's no plan to meet up again and I don't feel like I'm in much danger in general. I'm in a safe are of Quebec in Canada. Not worried.

Well to those of you who may be interested, I contacted Newegg for a RMA, they gave me a shipping label, I gave it to him, he shipped it back and they accepted it. I don't know what that suggests, they determined it was defective and not because someone broke it? Or maybe they just didn't test it? Either way, they shipped a new one, he's had it for a few hours and I haven't heard back. All should be well.

Bit of a hassle but everyone is happy. Not sure what happened with the CPU but yeah I'm done.
