Could also be because I've read the visual novels and they pack a stronger emotional punch, so watching the anime I am reminded of the events in the visual novels. 
Like this scene

While the anime did a relatively good job, it wasn't able to capture all the little details that make this scene so sad, from all the hardship of his life, just wanting to get away from it all after losing his wife and when he decides to finally come back and be the father his daughter deserve... He lose her to the same sickness that took away his wife... Quite tragic really.

I was thinking "so freaking predictable. I had seen this coming since ep1 of this season. Wonder Why people find 2D child death trageic when countless children are starving to death in Africa and else where?" When I get to this scene.
