Amazon to only allow "authorized resellers" to sell Apple products

• In a new agreement between Amazon and Apple, shoppers will soon see a selection of the latest Apple products on Amazon.com

• Currently, many Apple products are only available on Amazon through third-party resellers and the prices and conditions vary widely.

• The deal will limit resellers of Apple and Beats products to those authorized by Apple.

  • Independent sellers of Apple products will have their listings removed after Jan. 4, 2019, but they can apply for authorization through Apple.

• The United States Supreme Court has ruled that people who legally own a product may legally resell it, and federal law protects that right under something known as the “first sale doctrine,”

  • “an individual who knowingly purchases a copy of a copyrighted work from the copyright holder receives the right to sell, display, or otherwise dispose of that particular copy”

• Given Amazon’s dominance as an online retail marketplace, this deal gives Apple the power to control a large section of the resale market in ways that would otherwise be unlawful.

• Homepod will not be available on Amazon because it competes with Echo.

  • Until last year, the companies were in a standoff over the Apple TV.

  • Apple wanted Amazon to sell the product on its site, and in turn, Amazon wanted Apple to add its Prime Video streaming app to the device.

  • Amazon stopped selling the Apple TV in 2015, which CEO Jeff Bezos later explained was to avoid confusing customers who would assume Amazon's streaming service would come standard on a device they buy on Amazon.

  • Now, you can find Apple TVs on Amazon, and the Amazon Prime Video app on Apple TVs.

• Valve is reportedly working on its own virtual reality titles to fully take advantage of upcoming hardware like the Knuckles controllers, including a new Half-Life game!

• According to Valve News Network, Valve’s own VR headset is deep in development and when it eventually launches, it will be bundled with a game.

• That game is rumoured to be Half-Life: VR Story and it’s said to be a prequel to the events of Half-Life 2.

• Even if this is true, it could be years away.

• Stan Lee, the legendary writer, editor and publisher of Marvel Comics died on Monday at Age 95

• Lee created or co-created Black Panther, Spider-Man, the X-Men, the Mighty Thor, Iron Man, the Fantastic Four, the Incredible Hulk, Daredevil and Ant-Man, among countless others

• Netflix has added a feature where typing "Excelsior!" into the search bar will bring up Marvel titles

  • This is a reference to Lee's longtime catch phrase meaning "ever upward" in Latin.

    • Or as Lee puts it, ““Upward and onward to greater glory!”

• The latest Android security update (Nov 5th) could be causing text SMS messages to disappear for some Pixel 3 users

  • The severity seems to vary; both individual messages and entire chat histories have gone missing

• Others think they losts messages prior to the update

• some users have managed to recover lost messages by rolling the app back to an earlier version, which you can do by uninstalling updates from the app details page

R.I.P Stan Lee

Apple products such as the AppleTV and iPhone and HomePod were removed BY AMAZON from Amazon sales a while back (2015 I believe) because they refused to sell media devices that didn’t support Amazon’s media services.  Apple products were not the only ones, Google devices were removed at the same time.  Since then, Amazon has made apps for those platforms, gained dominance in some of the markets (such as Alexa), and now made agreements to start bringing some competing products back to the Amazon store through first parties this time.  That’s hardly an Apple draconian move.  As for resellers being official for online marketplaces, that’s nothing new either, and is yet another way they are working to make the underground market less profitable (along with purchase limits in various places, etc). As for the comment about ripping a livelihood from somebody by doing this...unless they had obscene markups to counteract buying at retail(ish) pricing anyway, they would be an authorized reseller anyway to get reseller pricing, or just be selling one or two personal used items, which eBay can handle just fine.

The meandering about the Whole Apple and Amazon deal was hard to watch. I UNDESTASND you're Canadians and not lawyers but isn't Jon a Lawer and isn't he American? Nobody thought to get his thoughts on what is potentially a SNAFU on the consumer protection side with the FTC? Not only that but any number of attorney's general of the 50 stats that is the United States can also get involved if they believe consumers rights are being violated by this deal. Just assuming "they both have lawyers and I'm sure they know the law" is a rather blunted and stunted POV.
