Fast RAID 5

So I'm wanting to build a NAS in the 15-20TB range. I'm hoping to use RAID 5, but I do a lot of video editing so I want to write speeds to be decent, (at least 100MBps). Does anyone have any recommendations for RAID cards that would be able to acheive this? Do things like the number of drives and how good the CPU is influence how fast writes are?

 

Also, how important would it be to use NAS hard drives? Or could I save some money something cheaper?

RAID-5 is basically obsolete.   For your application, I suggest a software RAID-10.  With 6 x 8gb drives, in RAID-10 "far", you should be able to almost saturate a 10gig-E connection with 24TB of space.  200mb/sec writes shouldn't be a problem with such setup.

RAID-5 tends to be very slow with writes because it has to read back existing data, and then recalculate the parity, and then rewrite.  Its also not very reliable at such large drive sizes.

Any modern hard drive by itself can sustain 100 MB/s easily. Most 2+ TB drives these days will get close to 200 MB/s. It depends on the number of platters and read/write heads.

Sequential reads and writes would be fast, random access will be slow with mechanical hard drives.

 

NAS drives are just regular hard drives with firmware "optimized" for NAS... it varies from company to company what the think NAS means... basically handle vibrations slightly better (so you can pack more drives close together) and other things.

 

Don't go for cheapest drives like WD Green or WD Blue and stay away from those drives that use shingled magnetic recording (SMR) because they have lousy write speeds and high latency.

I would be comfortable recommending HGST Deskstar NAS drives, in backblaze disk stats and hardware.fr's rma stats (though note data is for 2017) they're scoring very well.

Yeah, I was hoping to not go to RAID 10 since the cost of all those drives can add up quickly. But it would be nice to have those write speeds and not to have to get a beefy RAID card then.

 

And thanks for the suggestion Mariushm, I just may get those hard drives.

Raid 5 is useless now, I'd keep clear. I know you don't want to go for Raid 10 and I read that you do not want to spend money on more hard drives but data replication is important especially if you value the footage you are storing. I used to work in video production and stored my data on 2 hard drive arrays configured in Raid 0 until I had 2 hard drives in 2 different arrays fail on me because of poor cooling/storage practices. I spent over a thousand on data recovery, had I invested in a Raid 10 config or a better NAS setup I would never have had the issue. 

 

I'd recommend looking into Raid 10 if you are wanting the benefits of faster writes. You can then back up data onto separate drives as you fill up your raid 10 array. That becomes your long-term storage. I work off a 16TB Raid 10 array.

 

Ultimately it is your decision this is just my recommendation.

The sad thing is, only RAID0 and RAID10 have a write bonus rather than a penalty, so you'll have to pick between them. Obviously RAID0 is only for the mentally "less developed" when data has any significance at all, so that leaves RAID10. 

 

RAID 1, 5 and 6 are all stellar at reading data but all have either no write benefits or a heavy penalty.

Thanks guys! I think I'll bite the bullet and go for RAID 10 then. I'm gonna take a riskier route and go for used HGST Deskstar NAS drives to help offset the extra cost. But I'll make sure to back up frequently and save up some extra cash to keep on hand to replace the drives as I need to.

I’ll just add here im running 5x8TB(WD red) in raid-5. I get writes of over 700MB/s all the time. Using an areca 1880i. Ive done the same on a 1226 with raid-6 and 8 drives and get even high writes.

 

losing half the drive space wasnt worth it for me. I’ve also never had a red fail on me *knocks on wood*. Just an FYI, good luck with ur choice ?
