You do know you can turn that off, right?  You can set it to only share with local computers (which is good if you have multiple local computers, to minimize update downloads), or just disable it completely.

I know it can be disabled, but many people instruct to disable it didnt know such a nefarious setting existed, much less that it was on by default in their new OS.

During Windows 10 setup, there's literally an option to disable it.  If people don't know it exists, it's either because someone else setup the computer for them and didn't disable it, or they just don't bother to read before clicking 'Next'.  It's rather hard to miss if you're even halfway paying attention.

Also, nefarious?  Really?  While I do have issues with that setting being enabled by default (for example, I see it as a potential avenue of attack to infect systems directly through Windows Update), I'd hardly categorize it as "nefarious".

Go back to threads from 2015 on security forums like Wilders Security, Bleeping Computer and the like. Initially Windows 10 was set to download whether or not you wanted it, auto install, had an intentionally vague "install later" but no "i dont want this shit ever" option.

It had this massive security risk BS initially.

The EULA changes that basically took all the illegal and unconstitutional spying that Snowden outed and then made you agree to it to use Windows 10.

If you read the Terms as i did back when it first came out its totally different from any previous Windows EULA. It not only grants MS the right to your personal data, but the data of anyone who comnunicates with that Win10 PC.

The fact that telemetry could no longer be disabled unless you were a big corporation using Win 10 enterprise edition was another big issue.

The terms also give MS the right to disable software and hardware if they dont approve of it.

It also clearly states in the EULA that they have the right to transmit your data, including text, voice, pictures, video etc to unnamed third parties(NSA?).

What people had for years dismissed as tin foil hat stuff was pretty much proven to be very common by Snowden in 2013. I thought it was ironic that MS released 10 for FREE and made it try to install and reinstall itself like malware.

Do you remember the threads from back then? People were so pissed that Win 10 kept popping up that there were guides on how to prevent it from coming back. It was hilarious to me.

Then the threads about people analyzing the EULA and how similar the data collection and rights you have to grant MS was to what the NSA and GCHQ had just been busted for doing domestically.

Maybe the TLAs called in a favor that Bill owed them from back in the 90s when they decided to let him keep his company intact instead of breaking it up for being monopolistic. Maybe thats why they decided to give it away free and make it a giant spying rootkit.

Oh yeah almost forgot how they made bitlocker less secure with 10 too.
