Tablet for university

anhduy123z123

I'm a first year student in Germany and i'm looking for a tablet to take notes in class and do some video editing (Stylus is required) in the next few years and maybe 2 or 3 years after graduation. I've done some research and there are 2 options, the iPad Pro 10.5 and the Samsung Galaxy Tab S4.

So which one should i get?

Wait for the new iPads. It will be released tomorrow. If all you will do will be taking notes and video editing, buy the iPad.

Don't buy the Samsung Galaxy Tab S4. Any video editing software on android tablet will be blown up version of software created for android phones. The UI  is not optimized for tablets.

The surface pro will give you the desktop experience but it will give you poor tablet experience. Windows allow multitasking. Which means if you are not careful closing background apps, it suck up your battery life. You will get a lot of desktop apps but none of them are optimized for touch screen. So you will end up navigating through pressing small buttons meant for mouse pointers, not chubby fingers. There are hardly any tablet apps in the Microsoft store. iOS app store is a lot better. The apps there are specifically created for tablets.

So if you will use the tablet only as a tablet buy the iPad pro. If you will use it as a laptop replacement and plan to use it with mouse and keyboard, buy a Surfave Pro.

why not a surface?

I already have a msi gs63 as my laptop at the moment, the problems are the battery only last 2,5hrs, there are no sockets in my classrooms and sonetime i cant log in to the wifi in class so i'm looking for a tablet that came with IOS or Android as an alternative.

iPad Pro (Tomorrow there will be new ipad Pro 3rd Gen. either that, or 2nd gen cheaper) or Microsoft Surface.

Android is NOT an option sadly. OS is not very optimized for Tablets, and even less are the Apps.

Under Android there are no compareable Note Taking Apps that are even close as good. iOS has Notability and GoodNotes 4 (5 coming soon hopefully) as 2 very popular. And some others.

And yea, updates... iPad easy 5 or even 6 years. Samsung tablets get updates for like 1 year, then only sometimes security patches, that's it most likely.

And at last, Video editing: Luma Fusion for iOS.

I don't know a decent video editing app under Android which comes even close.

If I must be honest with you should get the iPads they will be updated for at least 5 years. However the Galaxy Tab's don't get updated after the first year (if you bought it with Nougat you wouldn't be able to get anything newer such as Oreo)

That is no longer true. Samsung is updating older tablets and some tablets which shipped with 6.0 and got updated to 7.0 are going to be updated to 8.0 in Q1 2019.

Judge a product on its own merits AND the company that made it.

Given that you already have a big laptop, I would say go for a 12.9” iPad. Either the 2017 or 2018. Both are excellent, with fantastic pen input, multi-tasking, and a wide range of student/note taking/productivity apps. Way more than Windows or Android at the moment.

The 2018 doesn’t do anything new, but it is nicer to use with the better screen, better login (FaceID), and much better Pencil charging mechanism. Feels like a much better designed product even though it does the same thing.
