Broke my son's motherboard. Need to build new PC. Which CPU to go with GTX 1070?

Amin S

Hello, I was installing a new CPU cooler on my son's PC (which I also built) and broke his motherboard.  He has an i7-4770k CPU (which he never overclocked), and my local Microcenter doesn't carry any 1150 socket motherboards.

I'm going to take this opportunity to build him a new PC while keeping his existing graphics card, which is a GTX 1070.  He's not going to overclock at all.  What's the best value CPU that won't bottleneck his GTX 1070 on FPS shooter games at 1080p?  I'm not married to Intel or AMD.  Just looking for a good value.  Thanks for any advice.

In my mind i would recommend the AMD 1600x as this is great value for money and the best mid range cpu that will keep your going once you upgrade the GPU to something better.

Probs intel for gaming, and an i5 for the 1070. It really depends on your budget

Ryzen 1600 is good when overclocked, my one is at 4ghz at 1.375V for reference

Either of those above work well.  Next time watch the Verge's pc building video, he specifically mentions that motherboards are fragile and to only screw in with confidence, not aggression.

That said, how in the holy hell did you break a motherboard doing that?!?!  Motherboards are damn near indestructible in my 30 years of handling them.  You sir, are the man ;)

As much as I love AMD, for 1080p Intel is the best option. If your son doesn't intend to play at 1440p at all, then go with a used i7 7700k and a used Z270 board. But if you think he might wanna upgrade to a 1440p monitor down the road, go for a 8600k or, if you can get one at MSRP, a 9600k. Because at higher resolutions CPU doesn't matter as much a core i5 will work perfectly and give you better power consumption. And it's cheaper.

And yea, overclocking is not necessarily a bad thing

  • CPU
    r5 5600x
  • Motherboard
    Arous b550 pro ac v1
  • RAM
    Tcreate 32gb ddr4 3600 cl18
  • GPU
    1660 super
  • Storage
    SN570 1tb
  • PSU
    Corsair CX750
  • Audio
    Lots of chi-fi iems
  • Operating System
    Windows 11 (lastest)

Given it's an LGA board, I'm going to go on a limb and say he dropped the CPU right onto the pins by accident.

OP, I'd personally say grab an R5-class Ryzen chip, or perhaps hunt eBay/hardwareswap for another 1150 board, seeing as the 4770K is still a good chip.

I'm not 100% sure it's the motherboard, but it's either than or something else died when I was installing the new cooler.  I am guessing I over tightened the CPU cooler, but who knows.  Could be the CPU.  All I know is that I checked and double checked all connections, and it only boots one out of 10 tries and then gives an error about "memory address is insufficient due to Intel Thunderbolt resource consumption".  I will see what else I can salvage from that PC after I build a new one else for my son.

Thanks for all replies.  I am intent on buying the parts from Microcenter on the way home today and doing the build tonight, so everything will be new not used (except for keeping his GPU).  And he shows no interest in overclocking, which probably isn't going to change.  I was trying to show him how I delidded and overclocked my 8700k,- he couldn't care less.

That's what I meant.  You may just need to reinstall everything to make sure the connections are solid, etc.  Really hard to see how you hurt it if you just did the cooler and didn't take out the CPU or anything.

But either way, good luck at MicroCenter, great place to play... I mean shop. :)  Post what you end up with.

I edited my post above with some more info.  Also, I did take out the CPU to clean the old paste and may have done something to it there.  I've built a lot of PCs and never broke anything, so I guess I wasn't as careful as I used to be when handling the CPU, putting it in place, etc.  But last night I literally took apart and reassembled everything twice, so I know it isn't a loose cable or something like that.

If you're still open to suggestion, I would suggest anything that is future proofed, and as I'm an Intel fanboy.. well.. Anything Intel 300 series. The Asus Z370 Prime is a pretty affordable motherboard for 1151/300series. Looks great too. At that point it's i5 or i7, 8th gen or 9th gen. Just go with whatever works for your budget at that point and you'll end up with a fantastic replacement no matter what the decision is.

This way he can hang onto the PC for time to come, as I see it.

For the time being the r5 2600 is the best value CPU. It wont bottlenck unless playing CSGO where the CPU is allways the bottleneck.

14nm shortage from Intel and current pricing trends have made them a poor option with the exception of really high end and if you have deep pockets

If it's value for your money I say AMD, my suppliers told me due to low stock on I tel chips some of the processors will increase in price I would suggest the budget friendly R5 2600 it's overclockable if you want to or leave it at base 6 cores 12 threads

It's a Seasonic Platinum 1000w PSU.  Regardless, I'm not focused on what broke.  I just want to build a new PC for my son and will be buying all new components.

I was looking at R5 2600, and some of the motherboard reviews said that they had to update the BIOS before the PC would post.  Can anyone recommend a MB which will go with the R5 2600 and work out of the box without me having to first do a BIOS update?

I was looking at this bundle: http://www.microcenter.com/product/5001847/amd-ryzen-5-2600-with-wraith-stealth-cooler,-asus-prime-x470-pro-cpu-motherboard-bundle

One of the reviews for that motherboard said "You should know that this board does require a BIOS update to POST despite the misinformation to the contrary. I went through two processors and motherboards before picking up an A6 to update the BIOS."

That's my only concern.

EDIT: Based on the reviews, I think I'm gonna go for this one: http://www.microcenter.com/product/5001885/amd-ryzen-5-2600-with-wraith-stealth-cooler,-gigabyte-x470-aorus-gaming-5-cpu-motherboard-bundle
