Specs needed for a small home file server?

By getting better parts you will increase the speed of it, but depends on the files tbh, if you are going to be uploading txt files, then i dont think you need something powerful, if you want to have fast access to this home server, i think you should worry more about the network card

Raspberry pi with mirco SD new is going cost more than that.

Also one drive (not even 1TB) what is the point? Just plug into one your existing computer and run a SMB server on that machine.

So I want to build a small home file server (at MOST, 3 people on at once). I want to use FreeNAS since it's cheap and easy to use. I also don't have a big budget ($25 CAD at most) for the computer although I have the necessary storage (a 750GB 5400RPM HDD). I will be storing pictures and maybe videos on this file server.

So my question is do I need a powerful CPU, is there a certain amount of RAM I need, etc?

Thanks in advance

with 25$ you aren't going to have a choice as far as part selection so much as simply finding any machine for sale that happens to be that price.

I'm willing to pay more than $25, it's just that I want to keep the cost down.

But my question is "will having more RAM and/or a better CPU make my file server better/faster?"

if i were you , i'd just add that 750gb drive to your main rig and share it on the network.

becuase whatever you buy for 25$ will be slower than the free option you currently have.
