Crucial MX500 or Samsung 860 EVO?

Hello,

 

I am looking for a new SSD to use as a boot drive and put a few games on. 

The Samsung 860 EVO 250GB is $100 right now (NZD, my currancy). I could get that, or the 500GB version for $50 more. So it's one of those two, or the Crucial MX500 500GB for $130. I'm not sure how their performances compare.

To summarise:
Samsung 860 EVO 250GB - $100

Crucial MX500 500GB - $130

Samsung 860 EVO 500GB - $150

 

Which would you recommend?

well that is not the whole story the samsung 500GB has almost twice the write endurance. 180 vs 300TB

Is it likely that I'll need that extra write endurance, and is it worth the extra $20?

well how long do you want to keep your drive? 

My current 500GB 850EVO has had 14.5TB written over almost 3 years.

So are you likely to need it no, not for this workload but it will likely mean your drive lasts longer.

Ok, so even if I kept it for like, five years, with heavy usage, it's not likely to die on me cause of write endurance. Phew.

To be fair though, that's only the rating the manufacturer gives it. Often the NAND can survive far past the rated ratings. Plus, as you mentioned, for the majority of people that's way more than they would ever write to it.

no, unless its a scratch disk or its having stuff constantly loaded on then moved off.

i use mx500 for a year now, no problem.

performance is about the same as samsung as both are limited by sata3 bandwidth.

if you talking about nvme, then samsung is flying high in terms of bandwidth.

Nah, just sata, so I think I'll go with the MX500.
