Best card suited for i7 4790K

Hi, It's been some time for me so I'm looking for a little guidance.

I built a pc for photo&video editing a couple of years ago and I want to upgrade to a 6 core( or more) processor because I'm concentrating more on the video side.

I want to give this rig to my 16 year old because It would be a significant upgrade to his current gaming pc.

Specs:
Gigabyte GA-Z97X-UD3H-BK

Intel i7 4790K 4GHZ

32g Crucial Ballistic Elite DDR3-1866MHz

This rig has never been over clocked. My boys rig has a running on a AMD A9 4GHZ with a eVGA GTX 1050 2 gig

Although I'm pretty sure his card would run fine but I would like to know what video card would be best suited for my current rig?
He mainly plays Overwatch on a Dell 32" 1080p 60hz, I'd like to get him a card that he can play more modern games at 1440 or possibly 4K ( I will upgrade his panel as well)

I don't think he will overclock but the rig is obviously capable. Any advice would be appreciated

I used to have a 4790k and a 1060 6gb for my 2560 x 1080 setup, but the sky is the limit with that cpu, the more you spend the more you get. Diminishing returns hasn't aggressively kicked in for that CPU for consumer graphics yet.

I would suggest a 1070 or if you want to go a little cheaper go for a 1060 6gb. By the way what power supply is the rig rocking?

My power supply is a Corsair RM650

Should have added that I am not budget conscious.

Whatever you can afford. GTX 1070 or 1070 ti would do really well.

I used a GTX 1070 paired with the 4790K for a while, and it worked out great. That being said, you could even go up to a 1080 if you wanted and it shouldn't present any considerable bottlenecking.

Not budget concious? Hell, just get a 1080ti if the prices drop after RTX launch, and future proof yourself.

But don't actually buy an RTX because prices are silly and you'd probably struggle to get one rn

It's all resolution dependent.  That CPU and a 1080Ti will rock ultrawides.  That CPU and 1060 will rock 1080p.  Etc.

 

Future proof isn't a thing, so not sure what the above poster is talking about.  

 

Get a GPU that hits the monitor.  The CPU will handle any of them.

@jstudrawa with most people suggesting 1060's and 1070's, and the the OP saying budget isn't tight...what I'm saying is, get a 1080ti to provide a little more futureproofing. And when I say that, I just mean the card will stay relevant a little longer? How is futureproofing not a thing?

But the concept isn't REAL.  Future proofing?  Just say it'll last a little longer, but future proofing means that whatever the future provides, you'll have proof against it.  It's not possible, in any conceptual form or industry.  If the industry moves next year to 100% ray tracing, the 1080Ti is fucked.  No future proofing there.

 

No,don't buy a 1080Ti just to have it last longer if you don't need it all that horsepower.  Base it on resolution.  Regardless if you CAN afford it, don't waste money if you don't have to.

 

Edit:  Not upset with you or bashing you, just trying to stop the use of that phrase, it's used too much as a reason to overspend.

@jstudrawa I'm that case, lets put it down to a difference in how we perceive the word. What if the majority of games don't implement ray tracing, and just require more of the normal grunt to run. In that case, the word futureproofing sits perfectly fine. In lots of ways a more powerful card will enable you to be more prepared, but not in the way you're thinking of obviously.

Definitely, I can get behind that.  All things staying the same or advancing normally, sure.  I can dig it.

 

Hell, I bought one for it to last me 5 years hopefully, so I'm hoping things.. stay the same

@jstudrawa let me clarify.  I want a video card that will maximize the CPU. I did mention that I would upgrade the monitor if need.

I can't upgrade cpu any further on this motherboard but have a little room on the memory but not sure if there will be any significant performance.

Depends on the games. Quite a few where the cpu will have trouble but could prolly still meet your needs. Buy the best card you can afford. Can never go wrong that way.

I'm rocking a 1080 with my 4790k no problems... Though I would suggest waiting a week to see what 2070 benchmarks looks like.

The only somewhat current game I play that doesn’t limit my frames would be pubg. Maxed out in black ops 3 and bf1. I’m sure the new cod and bf will be even worse. Bit of lag and still stutter when it can’t keep up on certain maps.
