so the problem being we don't know what to think until we see some independent benchmarks...

-Moved to Graphics Cards-

The 20xx cards seem promising, but I would wait for benchmarks before pulling the trigger on anything.

Yeah, probably should have thought before posting.

no prob, but we're pretty honest here when it comes to these questions. A lot of the answer will also come down to your budget, along with your current setup. If you're making a jump from a 1030 and money isn't so much an issue, then why not. but if you've already got a 1070 and you just want an extra boost in fps, you're not gong to see a large enough improvement to likely justify the premium you pay in getting the newer card. also I second @Crunchy Dragon. With ANY technology and especially with GPUs, wait and see. Vega was supposed to change the game, but now look at it.

Wait for benchmarks.

If you are looking at price/performance, a used GTX1080Ti will almost definitely beat the RTX2080. If I were you, I'd get a used GTX1080Ti then upgrade a few generations down when ray tracing is a more supported feature in games.

But who knows? That's why you should wait for benchmarks.

While your here, do you know how much further cards can go from here eg. surely a 1080ti could last for a long time at 1080p due to us almost reaching the apex at this resolution. Something might be off with what I just said. Pls be kind

sure, but again without knowing the rest of what you have the question is mute. if you get a 2080ti but you're using an i3 4th gen, well....

If you're assuming good supporting hardware and generally asking how much longer a 1080 ti will be relevant, i'd say you've got a bit

the 1080ti just came out march of last year, so we're a bit more than a year in. having said that, a good gpu should be relevant in my opinion 4-5 years before age starts showing.

but this isn't a "good" gpu, thiis is the current top of the  consumer market gpu that we're talking about. While games will undoubtedly get better over time, i think the resolution and visual quality of games has not been on moore's law for a while. i'd say given current gaming and what I BELIEVE will be coming in the future, I'd estimate running a 1080ti for a good 5-7 years before it starts to really show it's age and even then it will still be good for another year or two. since the 2080 is supposed to launch this month, there's just over a years difference, so you won't gain much in terms of longevity of the product or it's relevance. The price goes way up though, so whether the performance increases proportionally to the price will determine it's value

i think the 20 series is a big departure from the 10 series, the graphics core is completely different and now include a lot of new technologies...last time nvidia tweaked the rasterization pipeline it gave us maxwell...and kepler cards and everything before it started to tank in performance in newer games to the point where today a 780ti perform worse in games than a 1050ti...i can easily see that happening to maxwell and pascal cards as well.

IMHO, at launch and when testing older games the performance difference might not be that impressive, but in a year from now when testing new games and stuff with driver optimization that will roll out for the new cards, i think pascal will age worse than any other previous generation...so what might seem like a ''deal'' right now might turn out to be a bust in the long run...i might be wrong...but i think Pascal cards has seen it's better days already.

The time to buy a new GTX 1080 ti may have gone.

Last week I bought a new EVGA SC Black for $649 from Newegg US. This week the same card is $779.

There are still some deals left but they are going fast.

Since there are rumours that board partners had to buy 1000 series chips with 2000 series chips we may get another batch. If so, I hope they are heavily discounted.

Too many unknown

But what we can learn from history is that the RTX seem to be a breakthrough tech, and with any breakthrough tech, there are growing pains involved in the name of the early adopter tax, lackluster gaming support, and unoptimized driver.  Knowing this, I took a plunge on a 1080ti recently after the mining craze has died down and pricing on gpu has stabilized again.

If you don't mind the hassle/risk involved in purchasing 2nd hand, wait until new card launched and people replace their old gpu with the newest one and the 2nd hand card flood the market.

I currently have a GTX 1080 and I got it for £320 used and it is the best amount of money I have spent in a while. Getting the RTX 2080 will cost you more than getting a gtx 1080ti anyways and if you want to get the gtx 1080ti now people are selling it for dead cheap compared from buying new. I wouldn't recommend the rtx 2080 for gaming yet since there are only 3-5 games confirmed to have rtx technology and graphics is not the be and end all of games. I used to have a r9 270x and ran most games at 1080p at medium settings whilst playing with my friends and they had a gtx 980ti. We had almost the same amount of fun playing the game and if its a fast paced game you would notice the ray tracing if you stand still e.g battlefield 5. I don't really think raytracing is good for gaming right now but if it is not declined like the past physx technology then I might understand getting a rtx card. Really if you are looking for a great gaming experiences then just get a gtx 1080 ti for relatively cheap. If it comes really dusty just clean it up and it might look just brand new.

to op's question i think the next couple of jumps will be 4k/60fps becoming more common, and then 4k/120fps in 2-3 years, we are slowly getting there, 1080 ti and 2080 ti are still what i'd consider to be 4k/60hz cards, or 1080p/1440p/120hz.

personally i'm taking a gamble on the 1080 ti becoming cheaper when the 2080 ti comes out, then i'll have the benchmarks to decide which i want to get, if the 1080 ti doesn't get any cheaper, i'll start looking at the 2080 ti as it'll be the fastest card.

Wait for benchmarks. If the 2080 is atleast 15% higher performing , i'd get the 2080 so long as you find one around $700 where the non founders editions should be.

if not, and its more like 0-5%, ether find a new 1080ti, or consider snapping up a used one ..or 2.
