Windows Fast Startup is another method of putting the computer to sleep temporarily, it's evident if you have it on and check your CPU up-time in task manager.

Windows Fast Startup doesn't fully shut down your computer. I don't like my computer doesn't fully shut down.

It also causes issues with drivers that haven't been written correctly for it because they are never properly unloaded from the kernel when "shutting down" with fast startup enabled. IMO fast startup has the potential to be a great feature, but, like anything new, requires proper support from all hardware vendors for it not cause more problems than its' worth.

I don't get it.  It takes my pc, with a good OC and nvme right at 40 seconds to get to a usable desktop,  not counting the time it takes to type the password.  How u guys get less than 10 seconds, or even less than 20 seconds i have no idea

Yeah, that's a sensible boot time for a good OS.

My Windows 3.1 installation took around the same time :D:D
Though I rarely used Windows 3.1 at the time.

With or without my storage HDDs plugged in?

Without HDDs - 20s to usable desktop.
With HDDs - 35-40s to usable desktop.

When I was still in possession of my desktop, about 10 seconds from completely off (no fast boot) pressing power button to be in firefox watching a youtube video (windows 10). 850 evo in that case- I loved it. My current laptop (Thnkpad x220) it takes me around 50 seconds to boot up and login. Maybe another 20 to have a web browser open once I logged in. Just some old HDD (Arch Linux w/ XFCE, Windows 10 was maybe 10-20 seconds slower). Will probably be buying an SSD for it next month. My old laptop (Thinkpad x61s) it took me maybe 20 seconds to boot up and have a web browser open, but that was with SATA II speeds (wattOS, a stripped down version of Ubuntu with i3 WM, so very lightweight). I had a sandisk SSD.

Right now my issue is do I buy a 2.5" SSD for those SATA III speeds and use my 500GB HDD as external storage, or do I use my mSATA upgrade slot with SATA II speeds and keep my HDD in place so I don't have to carry around an external drive. SATA II seemed to work fine in my x61s, but I turned that off like once a month when I brought it out somewhere and the other components are slowing it down too.

I'll probably just buy the mSATA SSD for that decked out x220 experience as I don't want an external drive with me.

because most of us do not install bloatware at start like steam or torrent all those pop ups. We just straight go to browser to search for torrent after done that then we boot up the steam app.

Well my main PC has the slowest boot time of all the PCs and laptops I have. It takes like 3 minutes to boot Windows 7, but after that it works decently fast so I haven't bothered to get a SSD for it. My main laptop and secondary PC have SSDs and boot in seconds (I don't know the exact time). My other 2 PCs and 2 laptops also boot in the range of a minute or less and they have HDDs.

Yeah my computer doesnt have much to start at startup.  Desktop OK, power panel for my UPS, and windows security.  it does have a logon script for my domain... oh and thunderbolt 3.  I guess that's its own service/app.

I bet thats what makes it longer. the fact its on a domain.

The bios has fast boot enabled with hardware initialization set to minimal. (or whatever the term is)

just check my sleep mode.  17 seconds from pressing the space bar to log in  screen.

This is also why i disable it along with hibernation, sleep and hybrid sleep. My pc is either on or off and i want all my drivers and the kernel to freshly initialize instead of being kept in the same state.

i can't vote because my pc doesn't support sleep so i'll just say.

my system takes >60 seconds to boot, because i have a server board in my pc. so it takes a while to POST and on top of that i'm running RAID and it takes forever to initialize the RAID card too.

i also can't vote on fast startup because i run Linux.

I don’t know what fast boot is so I put no.

I never enabled any fast boot options.

fast boot is in the bios, it allows the pc to get up and running without initializing every device on the motherboard (such as USB ports, or unused sata ports. Fast startup, is a default windows 10 option that works sort of like hibernate/hybrid sleep.

I think some people are lying to themselves if they are saying less than 10 seconds. Hell my stupid motherboard spends 6-8 seconds just doing all of the posting crap even with quick boot on.

Now if we are talking about how long to boot AFTER all the post stuff... then yes it is maybe 4-5 seconds after that.

haha same. BIOS splash screen takes about 8-10 seconds, then the OS loads in about 5-10 depending on its mood.

FYI,  all you need to do is put a text file on your desktop with the text

"shutdown /s /f /t 0" (with no quotations)

Then save the textfile as FullShutdown.cmd.

whenever you want to do a full shut down for some reason,  just double click the icon.  you can have your cake and eat it too.   I pretty much only every do this before I install new software, or start windows updates.
