Can My PC Handle 500mbps internet speeds?

Hello! I don't know if this is a dumb question or not but I'm looking to upgrade to Bell Fibe 500 which offers 500 of both upload and download. I want to know if my PC can handle that, can all PCs handle that? Or am i asking some imaginary question? How can i find if my PC can handle this, thanks!

 

Here is my PC if need (I upgraded the GPU and PSU but that doesn't really mean anything in this category)

You just need to know if your MOBO has the supported ethernet port for those speeds. Most are gigabit so you should be fine

It's probably mbit per second not mbyte per second, so as long as you have Gbit ethernet, you should be fine, I think... :P

Make sure to tag and/or quote people so they get notified... :P:D

It doesn't specifically list the Wireless AC speeds but typically they're either AC600 or AC1200 so you should be good to go. Only thing that will let you know for sure is to open the case and see what motherboard you have and what wireless card it's using.

Wireless will probably depend a fair bit on your router and how far away you'll be from your router. Ethernet would be preferable though, unless the wiring would be a hassle.

Most 802.11ac adapters are 2x2 so only link up at 866Mbit max and more realistically you will be looking at real-world performance of half that, or even much much less depending on the range.

 

My own WiFi connection only manages 300Mbit in the same room as the router, 150Mbit from the next room.  I used to get 600Mbit but I think Intel messed up their drivers as its been declining with every update.

generally i would say yes but beside the Ethernet port which is fast enough on your PC there is one thing that could actually bottleneck you here.

 

you have one single 5400rpm HDD which is super slow and as soon as anything else is trying to access this drive (which will always happen because its the only one you got) you will get a bottleneck especially with write speeds.

I shouldn't imagine it likely a single download will hit 500Mbit anyway.  Connections that fast are more about keeping several clients fed than maxing out a single one.

 

I would certainly recommend an SSD though, they make a night/day difference to OS responsiveness.
