Frickin LAKE w/ liquid water found on Mars

Nicnac

A decade-long debate about whether liquid water on mars is possible comes to an end.

ESA's Mars Express Probe found signs of a ~20km long lake covered by ice but with liquid water underneath.

It is kinda really big news:

Quote

“This is the first potential habitat,” said researcher Roberto Orosei at the Italian National Institute for Astrophysics. “We don’t know it is inhabited, but if you’re looking for life on Mars, this is one of the prime places to look.”

Source: Wall Street Journal

since I've read it there first, I'm also going to link my favourite german newspaper: WELT

My opinion? Get Curiosity there ASAP! Probably not practical tho, considering it's lurking around Gale Crater currently. ^^

SpaceX launches are more tech related since rockets and that kind of stuff are technology.

Since this article relates to what was found, it's been moved here.

I can't wait for the day they find life that doesn't breath oxygen, and instead lives off of some other gas.

Scientists sometimes think in too small of a box.

That said, if the water is fresh, seems like a prime place to set up camp.

This just in a Dragon has disappeared from the LTT forums, they were last seen being taken into a UFO by little green people clearly speaking English saying "we are relocating you because you are not a dragon" :P

Not disagreeing but couldn't resist ;) What would be tech related tho is if NASA and others start expanding their tech research to get there faster and such because of this finding. Truth be told tho there has been frozen water found on the planet, perhaps we just found some frozen water that melted?

I mean, water on Mars will freeze at the poles, similar to here on earth.

Also if global warming is a thing on freakin Mars I'm going all the way to Pluto.

Because Mars has a thin atmosphere it could be caused by the sun. I could be wrong tho :P

I watched a documentary about how we could colonize mars with a heavy ozoning gas (I forget which) to speed up the process to something like 15-25 years instead of 100 years or more. So it's possible.

Huh, that's interesting. Would that be bad for the planet though?

I always found that way of thinking weird. Just because life works the way it does on Earth doesn't mean it can't work in any other way.

Not yet and probably won't happen in the near future. Even if it does have oil, just imagine the planetary wars between countries on Earth calling dibs on the Martian fossil fuels.

It's already cold on Mars. In face, if the Earth's orbit goes farther even just a few miles it will make global temperatures very cold.

Haha, yeah same. I mean, for ages they didn't think anything could live at the bottom of the Marianas trench. Yet, life.

That's something people always forget. Science is only fact until it isn't. So much science fact has been reworked over the years. That's why I'm always baffled by people that say, for example, fast phone charging or electric cars will never work. They will, it just takes time and one bright mind to have a breakthrough.

Ah we already have desalination methods, they'd just have to make sure that it didn't take too much energy to use. Plus the bi-product - more delicious rations?

It can be sub zero and still in liquid form? Interesting.

Funny thing is that at the time I didn't speak English so, I had no idea that some codes meant something. :D

For these people I tell them they where the car of choice back in the 19th century, because like today oil based cars where noisy a pain in the ass to run and really really dirty to fix xD They are quickly becoming that way again thanks to battery tech.

First doc I saw claimed up to 100,000 years but warming it could take 100 years lol... Called "mars making the new earth"

The other is NHKs Cosmic Front called Terraforming Mars (be forewarned bad acting), same as the first but doesn't state how long for us to breathe the air...

Both are available on curiositystream

As for is it good for the planet? Who knows, maybe warming it up too much would cause the ground to become unstable and collapse due to the ice thawing... All I know if I was offered to live on Mars w/o politics, I'd be packing my bag today even if it means 1% survival rate xD

Some worms and many microbes no not need oxygen to respirate. They use sulphide oxidation as an alternative to oxidative phosphorylation.
