Do braces hurt

From what I've heard, yes. I've never had them myself, though I've heard friends complaining about them hurting, mainly just around when they get tightened.

 

I don't know how much they hurt though.

The worst part are the spacers. After those settle in and they anchor everything to your teeth, your teeth will be pretty sore (like, can't eat chips) for a few days after every tightening. You get used to it pretty quickly.

 

Another annoying thing is if the braces rub into the sides of your mouth, causing raw spots. Your orthodontist should give you wax for this which erases that problem. They really aren't very bad, just keep your mouth extra clean when you have them on these next many months

I had a GF who had braces when I was a young teenager, let's say we did a lot of experimentation together and let's also say that I found out the hard way that in certain situations braces can hurt, very much.

They hurt alot the 1st week i had them, it felt so tight. after that week the pain goes away.

then the pain comes back whenever my dentist would tighten them, but its easier to adjust to them.

another thing to note is when the inside of your mouth rubs against the brackets, it can be really annoying, but they should give you wax or something for that.

im currently on retainers. and i think they are worse than the braces

They really don't hurt that badly... I dunno why everyone makes such a fuss about it. The spacers are a minor annoyance but they're not a big deal. 

 

I found mine cut into my cheeks for the first bit but that goes away quite quickly.

They don't hurt that much, they're mostly uncomfortable for the first few days, but you'll get used to them.

It hurts really badly after the first few hours (I used to wear braces when I was in high school), you might still feel uncomfortable for a few days then you'll get used to it (this is when you don't feel pain anymore). I had to eat porridge for few days because it hurt so badly.

After you get used to it, they'll be tighten again, and it'll hurt again. But again, it might take a day or two then you'll get used to it again.

I'd been wearing braces for like around 3 years ish. I've taken it off and now I need to wear a retainer, but I only wear it before bed.

 

Different people experience it differently, maybe I was those "weak" people so I felt more pain, but I saw one of my mates that only felt pain for like only a day then he could eat normally (though slowly).

The amount of pain will vary from person to person, depending on each person's pain tolerance and how much tooth movement is needed. I had them when I was in high school a little over half a century ago and they hurt for a day or two after each tightening. I also played saxaphone in school band so, for a few weeks, I had a royal case of hamburger mouth. However, the results were well worth it!

I had one go up into my gums and the pain was so bad that I had to pick it out myself.

 

The braces themselves didn't really bother me.

 

OP...

 

Painkillers BEFORE doing anything is your friend.

 

I didn't take any, wasn't the wisest choice.

 

Painkillers should really help. It shouldn't be too bad with them

they're for the ring mounts at the last molars on both sides, for the uninitiated. about 3x more achey, and lasts the entire duration right up to the night before the next dentist appointment, LOL

Yeah they were just to space the back ones apart. I still had my wisdom teeth in so they were a real nightmare

I never had braces since my teeth came in pretty well, but after having had 2 wisdom teeth pulled over the last year or so I've come to one conclusion.

Only two? That's fucking bush league, mate. All 4. One of them basically grew head-first into the tooth in front of it, and got wedged in so badly they had to mill bone away in order to get it out. Hurt like motherfucker. Honestly, if it hadn't been for that one tooth, it wouldn't have been so bad. I had little swelling on the other side.

 

Also, this is Germany. We tough that shit out on some weak-ass acetaminophen or ibuprofen, unlike you pansy yanks.

 

What's that about getting put under for the extraction? Bah. Hit me with that local and then send me home. Ain't nobody got time for that shit!

the first few months they will. and when you have appointments so the dentist can check on your braces. these sessions last a long time

 

someone mentioned spacers, those are the worst. 

 

sadly the dentist recommended i have a permanent retainer, which you cannot take out.

The only feel like your bones itch after they give you a thicker wire for a day or two. After that no. It's when the wire catches on your cheeks and makes your mouth raw is when it hurts. Just constant stabbing and scraping

holy shit didnt expect this many replies. I just got them and they arnt too bad. Dont hurt slightly uncomfortable. But I only got them for the top teeth right now, (putting bottom in 3 months) no spacers or any shit like that. Kinda annoying and my top lip kinda hurts cuz its jabbing agaist the braces.

Yeah I guess I did get lucky. But thats only for now. I only got the top braces right now, and going to get the bottom braces in about 3-4 months. A few months after that, they add the bands, and a few months after that, they add springs. Whatever those are.
