To each their own I guess. I didn't like the look of those Nike watches, and I hate Nike shoes.

That’s one way to see it. We brought aviation to watches. We brought diving to watches. We brought racing to watches. We brought fashion to watches...

We need something contemporary to bring to horology. And sneakers could be that. The Apple Watch is the wrong way to go because it’s obsolete by design.

There are people that collect rooster figures to decorate their kitchen with, a watch collection isn't any less weird.

Personally I find it pretty boring since watches only have 1 function and that's telling the time accurately. I have a phone for that. Checking your wrist is just as rude so that isn't really a valid argument point. To each their own.

Edit: I'm not against watches, I just find it impossible to be excited. Unless it can do something besides tell time, designer watches aren't that cool.

The Apple watch is a piece of tech. Disposable as soon as the new one comes out and this one loses favor. That's why I hate them.

A mechanical watch will work the same virtually forever.

Yes, but it's infinitely easier to check a watch than a phone without someone noticing.

Thanks for the laugh. I needed it. Anyway, sapphire crystal lenses are extremely nice, you don't have to worry about scratches. Water proof watches are very nice, I do go swimming with my mechanical and quartz watches.

It's fine if you don't like mechanical watches I like my $100 mechanical watch just as much as my $700 seiko. Unlike a phone, I like watches to complete a look or style. It's a fashion item, and @Mooshi don't know how flicking your wrist to see your watch is very rude... Anyway.

All watches need maintenance, it's just pointless for cheap watches because they're.. Cheap watches. But if you're buying a $1000+ watch or even close to that price point you've bought a watch you can likely pass down in the family line. And maintenance is worth it. I love watches and I love knives. Knives have one purpose, to cut. I prefer to rely on a purpose built item than an item made to do a bunch of different things. Sure they both function maybe just as good, but I prefer to check the time in a meeting by means of a watch than a phone.

Plus, I just appreciate the engineering that went into my watches. I love the exposed gears in my mechanicals, and I love the self updating clock on my seiko. No matter where I go in the world, I can get a perfectly accurate time. And with virtually no time loss or gain, it's always perfectly accurate.

For me, in an age where watches aren't as much appreciated I love owning something not everyone does. If it doesn't fit your needs to own one, then use your phone. But I've welcomed watches into my life and they're part of my lifestyle and I will always buy more watches.

Mechanical watches are cool, vinyl is cool and classic cars are cool. Not 100% sure why, possibly because they run contrary to the high tech gadgets that fill up the rest of our lives, but why is unimportant.

And as someone noted above the mechanical watch will still be working in 50 years longs after it's contemporary quartz watches and smartphones have gone to landfill, so there might be something in the permanence of a mechanical watch that we have with very little of with our other purchases.

@aki adakiWhen I was in school in France one of my classmates got 2 hours of detention for looking at his watch when the instructor was speaking. So I am just assuming that every French person thinks that it’s rude to look at your watch. Same goes for a wearing a hat indoors. I absolutely lost my mind when I went to university in Canada and almost everyone was wearing a hat...indoors!

This entire thread is just opinions. As Dizmo put it the world takes all types, IMO this is verging on the edge of being a compeltely useless discussion.

Takes way less time to rotate your arm than taking out your phone.

I agree. Taking out a phone and unlocking is mad work. And if you are outside, you need to wait for the phone to adjust it's brightness.

I bike often. Looking at my watch to know if I'm gonna be late is much simpler than stopping and taking out my smartphone.

These watch experts make you believe that you absolutely need specific features that don't matter. I am talking about having 100m+ water resistance, a sapphire crystal, lume etc...None of that stuff matters. Who swims with a watch anyway!? Why would you ever swim with a watch? It's like your in the market for a cheap quartz watch that gets the job done and you end up spending hundreds of dollars on a mechanical dive watch.

Of course we need these features.

Cheap watch doesn't get the job done. Something like this is an absolute must
