What if GPUs are sold like CPUs? and I dont mean APUS. I mean your motherboard has 2 slots ( kinda like server boards) these mobos will have dedicated VRMs and GDDR5 (imagine you can also buy them like DDR rams ?) This will make the Mobos bit expensive (probably double), you have to buy separate GDDR5 rams but the GPU itself is gonna cost alot less. But since you can reuse the Gddr5 on ur next upgrade,  there wont be low supply of ram chips.

That's quite cool, you could have a gtx 1080ti chip and then load it with 32gb of vram

interesting concept, but i think it would take too much change to the standard design that exists to be practical and profitable for most companies

Or the complete opisite, if your a 1080p video editor for example, you could have a 1050ti with 16gb vram rather then the pre loaded 4gb

Sockets and connections cause extra parasitic effects (capacitance, inductance and reflections). It's already a small miracle that they manage to send signals at such speeds on current graphic cards, what you're proposing is simply a bridge too far.

 

The industry is moving in the other direction, with HBM memory dies next to the GPU die in the same package, to minimize the mentioned parasitic effects.

That wouldn't solve anything because you will have people buying the most amount of vram that the board supports instead of the fixed amount current GPUs have

you'd need at least an EATX size board to fit that and the cooling

 

and the ram crisis would be solved if google deleted chrome, users wouldn't need such amounts of ram and prices would drop like a fortnite player grades

But that isn't fixing it. They still need same amount of RAM/VRAM. You'd be saving some minor components. Plus chips which are root cause of "shortage" are used in so many other ways that this wouldn't matter in grand scale.

Yeah I get the basic idea but then there will probably be specific sockets for each GPU Manufacturer and if you wanted to switch from NVidia to AMD you would have to get a new motherboard. The distance between the GPU and the RAM dies should be very less to maintain current levels of performance as mentioned by this post.

The industry is moving in the other direction, with HBM memory dies next to the GPU die in the same package, to minimize the mentioned parasitic effects.

But however the idea of being able to add more VRAM but not pay for more CUDA Cores and higher clocks, etc. is pretty good.
