Apple to Update iOS 11.4.1 to Secure Data over USB

Apple decided to release a small security update today to block usb accessories without a passcode after an hour of the phone not being unlocked. I think this is great for the consumer. Apple did release a statement that they are not trying to make efforts harder for law enforcement, but to create a safer more secure device  for the consumer.

Secondly doesn't the device require you to unlock your phone anyway to actually transfer stuff from pc to Iphone.

Is it one hour without any possibility to change it or is it one hour default and possible to adjust it yourself? Like you can set the phone lock to 30 secs, 1min, 5min etc? 

 

@DrMacintosh have you tried out the update or read anything about this? Currently running the ios beta so cant try it our for myself.

From what I read and understood, the devices ceases all and any kinds of communication through the lightning port after an hour, except 5V charging pin. So this would also include any kinds of smart power banks that charges based on some feedback and apparently GrayKey used one of these exploits to get unlock the phone which would in turn unlock all the data that would otherwise remained locked under the lockscreen

This is just a PR statement, in reality Apple only care about what effects their sales and the FBI already have access, they just need too pretend they are going through legal channels so it doesn't get thrown out in court.

With this being a software lock, is it not possible that it can be bypassed anyway? Greykey was already bypassing the passcode limit.

 

Don't get me wrong, i think it's a great idea. But i dont see this being the last thing Apple has to do surrounding the unlocking on phones by Law Enforcement

I think most phones nowadays at least requires you to unlock the phone initially before it gives the PC access to anything. For my Galaxy, you have to unlock the phone before Windows Explorer can see anything (can you bypass it? I wouldn't be surprised if you could).

The devices this update makes useless crack the passcode so they can get access. This update cuts out the common thread, access to USB Data.

It won’t be the last thing, but it does force police departments and other government organizations from having to go through a lot more hoops and hassle to get your data without a warrant.

I just updated my iPhone, after the update.. it became very very hot.. like uncomfortably hot.. I had to turn it off

I just want to clear up some misinformation here.

 

1. There is not a backdoor in iOS, there are many well documented instances of law enforcement trying to get in to an iOS device and being unable to (e.g. https://www.engadget.com/2018/04/13/us-lawmakers-question-fbi-decision-sue-apple-2016/)

2. iOS did not simply allow data transfer when plugging in a cable, it allowed devices to communicate with the host, in which the GrayKey device used an exploit coupled with a brute force technique to enter PIN codes without hitting any sort of throttling/wait periods.

I guess that time when Apple literally took the FBI to court because the FBI wanted to force Apple into making a back door for their devices didn’t happen.
