Does Windows 10 have any advantages over Windows 7?

Greetings,

 

*This post/discussion is to re-open the argument*

I am sure that this topic has been discussed multiple times but there have been many changes from then

 

I was wondering if Windows 10 have any benefits over Windows 7 e.g if it:

- Supports more stuff

- Is faster

- Is updated more often

- Has better architecture

- Is supported more

etc.

 

The reason I am asking this question is because even though I am ok with Windows 10, I find some things to not work as intended (I can say the same for Windows 7). Just wondering if shifting back to Windows 7 will have any drawbacks. If there are any, I can re-consider.

I don't quite like it either.

It has so much unnecessary stuff, opening the start menu or any options in so slow and doesn't have good UI either.

But there is so much stuff that is only supported on Windows 10.
I would like to switch but I'm not quite sure.

Windows 10 was only made to fix the mistake windows 8 was. I see zero reason to use it over 7 at this time. 

 

I dont need a cortana to do anything I can search google just fine. Dont need the stupid tile app thing. Dont need microsoft employees looking at my nudes and calling the fbi everytime i type the word bomb into a word document. Its a information collecting garbage os that offers me nothing

Heres a few off the top of my head:

• Cortana (Could easily be a con to windows 10, but i personally like it, dont use it much but having the icon there to right click to easily open task manager is something i use almost every day)
• DirectX 12
• The UI (I personally really dont like Aero [not to the point of hating it, but even i could design better], even though its a lot slower, which i hope they improve)
• Some nice "FINALLY" updates are coming (Dark mode file explorer got me hyped af for when that leaves the insider builds)
• Some newer SDKs (Doesn't affect the average end-user/gamer yet since software development takes a while)
• GPU in task manager

thats what i got in like 5 minutes besides the "its supported more" and, "its more secure", "no shit sherlock" type answers

DirectX has been a staple Graphics API for years, DirectX 12 IS exclusive to Windows 10, some games support it and (obviously) it performs better than DirectX 11, which is available on Windows 7, Differences in performance will increase, however, as developers get used to DirectX 12 and build new games from the ground up using it.

tl;dr: DirectX is an API with many versions, if you have run a game on windows, there is around a 99% chance it used DirectX, DirectX 12 is Windows 10 exclusive, DirectX 11 and below are not

That "mistake" was in fact a revolution - new touch screen environment (metro), Microsoft store (notice that Linux users was always proud of they "better" way to install applications, at least some of them - now Winodws have that too) and attempt to show that menu START is not the only way to use operating system.

 

Of course users hates revolutions - they hates Vista and Win8 - the most revolutionary systems since XP (that people hates too at the beginning).

 

For example - menu START. Almost everyone was unsatisfied that Microsoft remove that menu, but unlike other applications, most of them do not even consider installing any alternative, even if there was few better tools to create start menu than Microsoft one. Strange, because almost nobody uses Windows Media Player for movies or mp3, but in case of menu START - everyone refuses installs it as separate tool like they do in other types of programs (Pot, GOM, AIMP etc.). So - was the system bad or users? Complain but not even try to personalize their own systems.

In addition to what JustMATT said, Vulkan is the open source equivalent of DX12 and Vulkan is available in Windows 7.

 

When a developer chooses to make their game capable to use an async-compute API (DX12 or Vulkan), they generally choose to implement one or the other, and not both (though a DX12 game will still run on DX11 systems in DX11 mode).

 

So far, there aren't that many games using either, and the outcome of a game having one of these APIs has been pretty hit-or-miss, with some cases showing games to lose performance when the implementation of those APIs is poorly done. I think that the implementation trend leans a bit more towards Vulkan over DX12, precisely because it is multi-platform and open source.

 

But neither are hugely important right now, and from what I can tell DX12 and Vulkan aren't really things that the gaming community looks out for in a game.

I find that, overall, Windows 7 is a more solid, stable, private, and configurable OS. Windows 7 also has a functional start menu, whereas Windows 10 doesn't. Either can work, but for Windows 10 I find it's necessary to install a 3rd-party start menu like Startisback, Classic Shell, or Start10. And I also find it necessary to disable Windows Update and as much data harvesting in Windows 10 as is possible - which can take a bit of work.

 

At the minimum data-harvesting setting in Windows 10 Home and Pro, Microsoft is unilaterally taking personal and personally-identifiable data from over 3,500 unique data points in Windows 10, to create a meticulous and comprehensive picture of all your actions in Windows 10. Microsoft sends that data to its own servers, where it is compiled into a virtual profile of yourself. Microsoft then sells that data to other companies, governments, researchers, advertisers, for Microsoft's profit - AKA, for Microsoft's unjust enrichment.

 

The best way to minimize Microsoft's theft of your data (and that's literally what it is) is to, if using Windows 10, get either Windows 10 Enterprise or LTSB, which are able to lower the overall amount of data being stolen by Microsoft - and always use a local account and not a Microsoft account.

 

Those versions (Enterprise and LTSB) of Windows are also better protected against Microsoft's Windows updates, which are more of a threat to the average person than are viruses and malware, due to Microsoft's awful design and release quality level since 2015 after Microsoft fired many thousands of its testing engineers.

I use 10 for DX12 but I prefer 7 because when I search something  IT ACTUALLY SHOWS UP

I was in the same boat before upgrading from 7 to 10 (because 8 was garbage IMO). I like it, though I disabled most of its information collection functions.
