The most logical way to part with my GTX 770?

I've been meaning to replace my GTX 770 for quite some time now and I've been searching around for used cards that I know can do very well in 1080p situations like the 780 and 780Ti. I only mention these cards because I know how they perform in reference to my current card and I'm really out of the loop as to how new cards stack up as well as what is and what is not worth spending money on because I haven't kept up with PC hardware related news for quite some time. Odds are, I would end up selling my GTX 770 for whatever I can get for it and just put it towards any new/used card.

Anyone mind guiding me through this one? Thank you in advance

Edit: Completely forgot the 10xx cards were a thing already, would the 970 or 980 be a sizeable upgrade?

To upgrade from a GTX 770 to a 780 isn't really going to be worth it. What's your budget? What games are you hoping to be playing?

I've been playing a lot of GTA V online and PUBG lately, both games of which I'd like to play on max or near max settings, something my 770 just is not capable of doing.

Preferably as cheap as possible would be nice, hence why I automatically jumped to the second-hand market. Playing games isn't really my main hobby anymore, just wanna get some better performance and if I'm being honest with myself, this card won't last forever anyway, so replacing sooner rather than later would save me some time in the future I guess.

Also, sell the 770 on eBay. Your patience will dictate the price to a certain degree, but expect around $100 net.

Assuming I can get around $100 for the card, I'd probably be willing to throw another $100-$150 on top of that. Would I be best off going new or used? I remember a while back a lot of people talked about staying away from used cards because they'd probably been mined on, is that something that carried over to the current used market?

I was just looking at some 970's, they seem to be going for very fair prices.

for 250 you can now get a rx 580, you are always better off by buying used ( a 980ti can be found for that much)

If you can get a 980ti for around $250 then I would say jump on that.  Some can achieve 1070 ti scores in benchmarks and that impresses me. Of course heat and power will be higher than a newer 10 series card, but I have no idea how they compare to your current 770.

If you can, buy used from face to face deals. There's a lot of fake cards on ebay at the moment. They're usually easy to spot and appear to be priced too good to be true.

GTX 970 will probably be 20-30% better than your current card, or if you can find it at a reasonable price then a GTX 980 would be a pretty decent step up. Otherwise a 1060 6GB if you wanted to go new. The 1060 6GBs retail for around $300-$330 depending on the model.

The GTX 980ti definitely would be better, but the RX 580 would come close to the GTX 980. If you had a FreeSync monitor then I would say go the RX 580 over a GTX 980. (assuming they're both the same price)

The Corsair HX650W listed in his signature is more than enough to handle the cards. It's not an issue.

According to the link I was given above, the 980Ti ousts the 580 in pretty much everything. However, I don't have a FreeSync or GSync monitor. Mind linking me an example of a fake GPU listing so I know what to sorta look for?

Right now a used 970/980 sounds very appealing both in terms of power and the fact that I can finally stop being held back by 2GB of VRAM because honestly, the 770 has a lot of potential to run games on higher settings than what I'm running now, but it is kneecapped by its 2GB of video memory.

I mean, I'm not really objecting to anything I'm doing, just don't know what purchase is reasonable and makes the most sense.

I really do believe you shouldn't waste money on anything below a 980. Strive for the 980 ti though -- they still seem to be usefully relevant.

Considering the 980 is already two generations old and what 3-3.5 years old I highly agree and not waste money below a 980.

It's " kneecapped " as you put it cause it's four generations ago, and five years old, you can't expect it to run any relevant games. I'm impressed you lasted this long. Seriously consider a 980 Ti which is already getting a bit old or 10606gb.

I see. Do you think my 4690k is going to be a limiting factor when paired with a 980 or 980Ti?

Based on age alone no as I have no other knowledge to conclude much else. Also with my 4440 I was running Crossfire with rx470's with no apparent bottleneck. Fourth gen Intel was 2014? The 980 Ti was last to come out in that lineup in June 2015 so I believe your CPU would pair greatly.
