TheGermanEngie

Found a 970 and 1060 3GB for the same price on letgo. Which is better for performance on 1080p games? Which is better for power savings?

equal in speed, but 1060 3gb uses less power. Since they are the same price, the unwanted 3gb is the better deal.

The 1060 3GB is a good bit more powerful.  It's almost the same as a 980.

You're better off with the 1060.

I'd keep looking until you find a 6GB 1060 or RX 480/580

I edit my posts a lot, Twitter is @LordStreetguru just don't ask PC questions there mostly...

3770 is compatible.

PSU is worrying though. This build wont use more than 300w even when overclocked, but 400w units are usually built with cheap parts that fail quick or even dont do their maximum rated output at all. What is the model of the PSU?

Speak of the devil, I just noticed a sweet deal at my local micro center. A 500W Cooler Master MasterWatt Lite for 24.99 after rebate. Should I go with this one instead?

no, the lite one is also bad. New units with less than 80+ Bronze shouldnt be considered, because missing that means some serious cost cutting in materials used to build the thing.

My friend swapped our his 1060 for a 980 and performance didn't change except for where he was running out of VRAM. You can see the same here:

This question is just like asking which is better for racing: a Ford Fiesta or a VW Golf.

You can race on them but neither of them is a good choice for it.

In this case, I'm going to have to recommend the 1050Ti for its 4GB VRAM as 3GB or 3.5GB is just not enough in 2018 for AAA  gaming. Or alternatively, the RX 470/570 if you can find one for a good price.

Judge a product on its own merits AND the company that made it.

You're right, maybe the RX 470 would have been a better choice. A bit higher power consumption but an extra gig of VRAM is helpful. Kinda too late now to cancel my 1060 order though... Oh well, the more you learn...

When you receive the GTX 1060, you can request a return and send it back.

You know that a 1050 Ti provides half the performance of a 1060 3GB regardless that it has 1GB more of VRAM, right?

Not really, it isn't a better choice. The 470 is considerably weaker in the majority of games. The RX 570 comes a bit closer, though the real competitors to the 1060 3GB are the RX 480 and 580 4GB. You can turn some settings down to High instead of Ultra and the 1060 3GB will be more than capable delivering good consistent framerates on 1080p. Also, don't go crazy on the AA, especially MSAA.

10% lower performance is a bit weaker but definitely not considerably weaker by any stretch of the imagination.

If there are games OP plays which struggle on an RX470, the GTX 1060 3GB wouldn't be able to handle it either.#

If you do return the order like I suggested earlier, an RX 470/570 or an RX 480/580 4GB would be good. If you want closer to 1060 3GB perf then the RX 480 is roughly 10% faster than the RX 470.

10% at this performance bracket is considerable especially when 10% is the difference between locked 60 FPS and fluctuating lower FPS. In the best case scenario the RX 470 is matching or 1-2 FPS behind the 1060 3GB, while at worst case scenario you'll have to turn down settings on the RX 470 to achieve solid 60 FPS (I assume that's what OP is looking for with these GPUs).

The RX 580 4GB is the best choice if it doesn't cost much more than the 1060 3GB, though it consumes considerably more power.

It's not for me actually. I bought it to put it into a used parts build which I'm gonna flip for cash. It's perfectly fine for 1080p gaming, which is where I'm marketing it towards. High settings, not Ultra. Will purr along happy as can be. I can't even tell the difference between high and ultra if I'm honest... the buyer most likely won't either. In the end it'll all work out. A win for not having to wrestle with the process of returning used parts, and a win selling a PC to a budding PC gamer.

If you want the full specs of the PC I'm putting the 1060 into, check out the post on my profile called something along the lines of "HONKIN' ASS DEAL". lol
