16 y/o deciding on building desktop or buying another laptop

I have a dilemma here and I was hoping one of you could help me out. I currently have a 'gaming' laptop that I purchased second hand from Kijiji for $800 (CAD) https://www.amazon.ca/Asus-GL503VD-Gaming-FireCuda-Keyboard/dp/B0753MSN75

The problem is that this laptop no longer satisfies my needs. The 1050 just can't deliver enough performance in modern-ish titles. I've been thinking of building a desktop, but then with the crazy gpu and ram prices is it even worth it? Would I really be able to build a desktop that highly outperforms this one for, say, $1200? I have a razer mouse and a mechanical keyboard from an older pre-built, but the cost of a decent monitor also has to be factored in here.. Is sacrificing portability worth the slightly better temperatures and performance?

Save some more money, 1200 cad will get you like a 1060 6gb, but that's not really worth it over a 1050, you're still playing med/high 1080p

Try using the PSU Tier List!

How to reset the bios/clear the cmos

My current rig:

CPU: Ryzen 7 3700x

Ram: 1x16gb DDR4, 2x8gb DDR4

Storage: 1tb nvme ssd

GPU: gtx 3080

Monitor: 23.8" Dell S2417DG 144hz g-sync 1440p + 27" Acer S271HL 60 Hz 1080p

A Ryzen APU system would perform around the same and will give you a base build which you can throw in a high end card when the GPU prices (hopefully) drop.

Honestly, money isn't an issue, I make $300 a week and I have no bills to pay. I can put more money into it if needed.

Also, would waiting for the new 11 series graphics cards be worth it?

Reply or @ someone to notify them :) Also if you don't mind waiting 4-6 months, sure, otherwise now is a good time as any to get an msrp gpu

are you kidding me? more than double the performance is not worth it? you can max out any game with a GTX 1060 6gb at 1080p and still get 60+ FPS (way above 60 FPS even for most games, some of the AAA titles even reaching 100+ FPS at max settings on 1080P)

Haha Ryzen APU can at best beat a 1030, still gets smoked by 1050.

If you wait for the 11 series and wont pay the early adopter premium, that's more like buying at the end of this year... The GPU shortage left many gamers starved for a new graphics card, and GDDR6 memory used by them are not produced in enough numbers to deal with the demand (assuming mining dont kick in again).

If you're willing to buy used cards, the gtx 980 and 980ti are good options. Their performance equivalents are the 1060 and 1070. If you only get new stuff, you will need at least 1.3k (corners cut) preferably 1.7k budget.

If you can pour money, push to an i7, get a 500GB SATA SSD and 16GB of RAM. B360 motherboards can use up to 2666MHz RAM, so dont need to go for higher frequency ones specifically.

If you can, but 8GB should work fine for now. Windows will page file browser windows. Made a within budget variant with better SSD, different case, slighly worse but suffiecient PSU, and sadly a 4 core CPU

i know it says 3GB but there's 6GB benchmarks aswell, this is the most recent benchmark video that i can trust.

the average for all these games is 87 FPS

If you can live with your laptop a bit longer, I would wait for the 1160.

He will have to upp his budget quite a bit to fit that kind of caliber PC

Also the monitor i suggested is a IPS ultrawider 1080p monitor eunning at 75 hz

I didnt recommend 8700k, but just to serve as the highest power draw scenario. My recommendation will be the locked 8700.

i saw lots of benchmarks with a GTX 1060 because i was interested in buying it before, weird that a GTX 1070 struggles with 1080P

i know it says 3GB but there's 6GB benchmarks aswell, this is the most recent benchmark video that i can trust.

the average for all these games is 87 FPS

Minimum frame rates are much more important than averages. Just looking at the 1% lows, 1060 6GB always dip below 60 fps with cranked settings, not so pleasant.

i agree but its pretty easy to find a sweet spot by turning down something instead of crazy maxed out, hammers your GPU for no reason in my opinion
