no it's not...the GPU itself, how many cuda cores, what generation of the architecture it is, the GPU core clockspeed etc...plenty of other things will affect the performance of a graphics card a lot more than memory bandwidht, which really is pretty much irrelevant.

970 has:

7.0 Gbps memory clock

4GB GDDR5,but it's 256 bit bus,therefore it has 224GB/s

1060 6GB has:

8 Gbps memory clock

6GB GDDR5,but it's 192 bit bus,it has 8*6*32/8=192Gb/s

Which GPU is better? The 1st has less memory, but it's faster. The second has more memory, but it's slower.I guess 1060 6GB is better for gaming, the 970 is better for everything else?Someone said it's better to have more memory and higher memory clock, but at the end the GTX 970 is faster, because it's a 256 bit bus

no, the GTX 1060 is better at everything, the 1060 is about the same performance as the GTX 980.

Memory bandwidth doesn't mean much...it's just 1 stat amongst others.

No it's not. Look at an R9 290X, its memory bandwidth is 320GB/s - because of that a 290X performs quite well at higher resolutions but I'd still prefer a 1060 6GB overall due to multiple other reasons.

Gtx 1060 is faster than gtx 970 ,Nvidia match the 1060 performances to a gtx 980  before lunch , which is faster than gtx 970  so it makes no sense gtx 970 is faster than 1060 and comparing them with memory bandwidth is different cos both 970 and 1060 use different gpu architecture

It matters if u want to run your games with ultra texture and at higher resolution like 2k

I disagree with u the 1060 is faster than r9 290x at higher resolution like 2k to 4k cos it has Extra 2gb of vram which makes a huge difference when gaming at higher resolution . Unless the game is fully optimize for AMD GPUs like far cry. Gtx 1060 is faster even at 4k gaming thanks to it extra 2gb vram

I think you didn't exactly understand what I wrote. I said that the 290X has relatively high memory bandwidth, which makes it quite competitive at resolutions like 1440p. I never compared it to a GTX 1060 performance-wise, the 290X is like 3 years older. Though despite its age, it should perform like a 3GB 1060 on average and beat the 6GB one in some specific titles, while drawing more than double the power of course ^_^

Wrong. It has 4GB of GDDR5, the last 512MB part is just a lot slower in terms of bandwidth.

The 512mb is not gddr5 but a slower memory

Can you provide a source for that claim? It's definitely GDDR5, just wired differently for the last part due to disabled parts of the GPU chip.
Here's a more detailed info:
https://www.pcper.com/reviews/Graphics-Cards/NVIDIA-Discloses-Full-Memory-Structure-and-Limitations-GTX-970

Quote

The most important part here is the memory system though, connected to the SMMs through a crossbar interface. That interface has 8 total ports to connect to collections of L2 cache and memory controllers, all of which are utilized in a GTX 980. With a GTX 970 though, only 7 of those ports are enabled, taking one of the combination L2 cache / ROP units along with it. However, the 32-bit memory controller segment remains.

Do not spread misinformation, research first :) GDDR5 is the memory type, it's still a GDDR5 chip on the PCB, just wired in a way that the bandwidth of it is low, which results in a loss of performance if it's used.

1060 same performance as 980. Funny joke.

970 crushes 1060 so just get it instead if theyre the same price

I wonder the game gtx 970 crushes gtx 1060 except for one game watch dogs 2 at ultra graphics but later the gtx 1060 became faster  thanks to improve drivers so I wonder and besides Nidia matched the gtx 1060 to gtx 980 so why that  most still believe gtx 1060 is slower than gtx 970 whiles the 980 is faster than 970

@Overclock Gamer And where does it say that it doesn't have 4GB of GDDR5? If your claim is true, then give me the name of the memory type for the last 512MB part. It has to be something, and modern GPUs only use GDDR5, GDDR5X, HBM/HBM2 or DDR4/DDR3 for lower-end models.

what are you talking about?

Even the 3GB cut down GTX 1060 is noticeably faster than a GTX 970...the 6GB 1060 is as fast or faster than a GTX 980 depending on the game...go see benchmarks and reviews...

yes but besides the statistics and other crap the actually human performance for a computer is faster than the 1060
