I already have a GTX 1070 right now, but someone's offering a GTX 680 for $60 to me.  I'm pretty new to PC building and I would like to ask; would I get any improvement in performance from an added (really old) GPU, and also, should I buy it?

In gaming there will be no improvement at all.

I fail to see any clear scenario where the 680 in conjunction with a 1070 would improve anything tbh. Maybe GPU accelerated folding or mining on the 680 while gaming with the 1070 if it's possible.

New Build (The Compromise): CPU - i7 9700K @ 5.1Ghz Mobo - ASRock Z390 Taichi | RAM - 16GB G.SKILL TridentZ RGB 3200CL14 @ 3466 14-14-14-30 1T | GPU - ASUS Strix GTX 1080 TI | Cooler - Corsair h100i Pro | SSDs - 500 GB 960 EVO + 500 GB 850 EVO + 1TB MX300 | Case - Coolermaster H500 | PSUEVGA 850 P2 | Monitor - LG 32GK850G-B 144hz 1440p | OSWindows 10 Pro.

Peripherals - Corsair K70 Lux RGB | Corsair Scimitar RGB | Audio-technica ATH M50X + Antlion Modmic 5 |

CPU/GPU history: Athlon 6000+/HD4850 > i7 2600k/GTX 580, R9 390, R9 Fury > i7 7700K/R9 Fury, 1080TI > Ryzen 1700/1080TI > i7 9700K/1080TI.

Other tech: Surface Pro 4 (i5/128GB), Lenovo Ideapad Y510P w/ Kali, OnePlus 6T (8G/128G), PS4 Slim.

Not SLI - I already knew that, but would there be any scenario where having a secondary graphics card could come in handy?

No you.

680 is approx = to 1050ti with less vram.
The only use you can get out of it is as a physx card but physx is kind of dead, at least in the gpu dependant form. Usually runs on CPU now

?

Was that a sad attempt at trying to insult me? LOL

680 is approximately dead in 2018 at 1080P resolution, too weak to push newer AAA games and 2GB is not enough even for high textures in a lot of newer games.

Why so serious?

The GTX 680 is not dead for 1080p gaming, unless medium textures "literally" burn your retinas. Not everyone is running top of the line hardware. It's useless to this guy because he has a 1070 though

Cooking pizza.

I enjoy buying junk and sinking more money than it's worth into it to make it less junk.

GTX 680 is not even really close to a 1050Ti By the way, in some games the 1050Ti bests a GTX 780 Ti.

If you look at the clock speed of the 770 in that chart it's like 1ghz, most can run 1200-1300 no problem, even out of the box without turning up voltage. GTX 680 can definitely run with 1050ti, but the point is moot.

The card is only useful for physx but physx is dead.

There is nothing you can do with a GTX 680 having a GTX 1070 in your system already.

1050Ti can overclock too, and yes PhysX is dead also.

Good physics are great but not when they cost half your FPS to have it, wish Nvidia & AMD would partner to make gaming great again (physics)

Only dead in the GPU dependent form, it's integrated into many games but as the CPU form so that's vendor agnostic. Hopefully they can improve it to the point that the GPU simulation was at.
