AIO verses large air cooler comparison (thermal paste dlc)

Put this here since it's not just air or liquid cooling only.

 

To anyone looking at needing a aftermarket cooler and stuck on buying a AIO or air cooler, I got you. 

 

The two coolers being compared is the Dark Rock Pro 4 from Be Quiet! (air cooler), and the X62 Kraken from NZXT (AIO). The reason for chosing these two is, well I wanted the best. 

 

Be Quiet! Dark Rock Pro 4, twin tower aire cooler with included 120mm and 14mm fans (one each). 89.90 US

NZXT X62 Kraken, 280mm AIO with 2 140mm fans included. 159.99 US

 

The test bed is as follows

Dark Base Pro 900 full tower case, front door open

6 140mm case fans all running at medium speed at all time off the cases fan controller, 3 intake and 3 exhaust

8700k delided at 5.1GHz

1080ti Lightning using a custom fan curve in Afterburner, set to silent but cool as possible.

Room tempureture of 24.4c

 

I chose this set up because the case is large but not designed for airflow, and the CPU is delided so easier to see the differences in cooling. 

 

I'm going to post 3 sets of data, the X62 using Arctic Silver 5, the DRP4 using GELID GC-EXTREME, and the X62 again using the GELID GC-EXTREME (bonus DLC baby) The goal is to see the difference between the two coolers, and if there is a difference between the two pastes, since Arctic Silver 5 and MX-4 have been in the spotlight recently. Last post will include some conslusion remarks. 

 

Each test uses AIDA64 for 20 minutes, the peak temperature is recorded and a screenshot of the graph posted. I then run the Far Cry 5 benchmark 5 times and watch the peak CPU temperature, and the GPU temperature. 

 

The X62 using the Arctic Silver 5 thermal paste hit a peak temperature of 76c in AIDA 64.

In Far Cry 5 the peak CPU temperature 62c, the peak GPU temperature was 51c.

The Dark Rock Pro 4 (very easy to install)

Hit a peak temperature of 79c in AIDA64

In Far Cry 5 the CPU hit a peak temperature of 65c, while the GPU hit a peak of 52c.

 

Honestly a surprize since the air cooler dumps so much heat into the case. No fan noise form the graphics card was heard.

Looks like the slight difference in temps doesn't justify the massive difference in price, I kinda figured it would end up that way and its one of the many reasons why I prefer aircooling, any way nice thread.

Except the X62 is really exspensive for a 280mm AIO. You can find them for around $100-$120 normally. 240mm you can find for $89 with 4 fans included

Sounds like a lot of work and wasted space when a DRP or similar will allow passive cooling of slightly overclocked machines.

Well the Be Quiet! Dark Rock Pro 4 wouldn't have been my choice aircooler for price to performance either so toche, besides the kraken is known for its performance so even disregarding price the fact that an aircooler who's only disadvantage is the cooler's size is in the same ball park as a kraken is the what most people will take away from this thread I imagine.

The X62 is about as much money as you can spend on a AIO, obvious RGB is obvious. 

 

Almost went with the Noctua D15, I was worried about the coating on the DRP4 hurting performance, but in every comparison I found it was by a few degrees. So the argument could be made the D15 could match the X62 for the most part.

 

If the D15 was using more expensive thermal paste, wonder what happens when the X62 has the expensive paste.

While testing a 4 Ghz OC on my 1700 with a Prime95 3 hour test session, I hit a max of 92C with my Kraken X62 + Kryonaut paste... but I think I was a bit too aggressive on the LLC and now that the summer heat is starting to settle in for me, 4 Ghz won't be possible until next fall. And by then I will have probably started my next build. :P

 

I've since reduced my OC back down to about 3.9 and temps rarely surpass 70C even during heavy workloads. Max temp was 74C during a Realbench test. Ambient temp at the time was around 83 degrees Fahrenheit with 2 table fans and 1 box fan running.

 

The X62 is not really worth the price premium, even with the sexy RGB. However I got it from family members as a Christmas gift, so I won't complain too much.

I think you had an issue outside the cooler. I ran my X62 on a 1700X before my 8700k. Even overclocked I never saw temps over 70c. Might have been the paste, or the block wasn't making contact with the IHS.

I always double check the contact upon mounting a cooler, and for me it was snug and nicely seated. I always use the line application method for thermal paste to ensure good coverage too. I've built quite a few PCs for local clients over the last year and never had any complaints about heat caused by a bad cooler installation.

That kind of OC is, like I said, not possible for the next 4 months because of the heat and because I'm in an area where electricity rates rise significantly during summer months. Meaning less A/C unfortunately.

Totally agree. My 1700X isn't stable everywhere when at 3.9GHz or above so I run it at 3.8 and low voltage, still an awesome CPU.

The thing is when using the Arctic Silver on the AIO (which is very common) it did. What blew me away is how my 1080ti didn't change temps, which it does if I have the radiator in the front. Should have mentioned I run the radiator in the top as an exhaust for that reason. 

 

Still don't know if the new thermal paste will make a difference with the AIO. First thing tomorrow I'm going to sort that out.

Only triple rad AIOs actually perform better than air coolers. Otherwise difference in performance is a so small that only higher OC tips it for AIOs.

 

Small tip for this and any following testing. Always use same unit throughout text. Or if you use multiple variations, have both present in every time unit is given. So you give room temp in degrees, not stating what degrees. I assume they are Fahrenheit. And then with actual testing you are using Celsius. This is rather confusing seeing  that your ambient is about same with max temps for CPU.

120mm AIOs are, imo, kind of junk. They're not worth the price premium over even something like a Gammaxx 400 or 212 Evblow. The only real use case for them is attempting to overclock in a case with so little room that even a "big stock" cooler (think RCX-Z300 or Hyper L3) will fit, but that still has a 120mm fan mount. The CM Elite 110 is a perfect example of when a 120mm AIO makes sense.

 

In damn near every other case, you're better off spending a little less for an air cooler or a little more for a 240mm AIO. The price to performance of 120mm AIOs is poor, and many of them are just outright crap.

 

Looking at you, "Aigo RGB cooler", that leaked in a refurb I was working on.

Aerocool DS are the best fans you've never tried.

Small tip for this and any following testing. Always use same unit throughout text. Or if you use multiple variations, have both present in every time unit is given. So you give room temp in degrees, not stating what degrees. I assume they are Fahrenheit. And then with actual testing you are using Celsius. This is rather confusing seeing  that your ambient is about same with max temps for CPU.

OK, this is interesting.

 

Using the GELID GC-EXTREME the temps now perfectly match the Dark Rock Pro 4, so much so it's not worth posting them as they are a mirror of them, even the temps on the 1080ti. Ambient temperature is the same, I checked with all three tests. It should be noted the Dark Rock Pro 4 also had no issues with my 4 dimms of Trident Z for clearance.

 

So, I would say it's safe to say the temperatures both for the CPU and case temperature since I kept the fan speeds where they could almost not be heard are the same for both coolers. 

 

Twin tower cooler.

Pros:

Cost

Lasts as long as the ability to buy a bracket for future sockets from manufacturer

safer for other parts of the PC. (no fluid)

works well with older cases(no radiator mounting)

Cons:

Large so covers portions of the motherboard

RAM clearance needs to be considered (though I had no issues with Trident Z, did have an issue with KLEVV)

felt vibration in my desk from cooler

 

Large AIO

Pros:

Does not cover motherboard, (fan headers, lights, etc)

easier to access CPU

Cons:

can be more expensive

requires radiator mounting locations in case

3-5 year lifespan

 

Conclusion, while I enjoy my X62 and find the RGB lighting beautiful, it's probably my last AIO since working with the Dark Rock Pro 4.

 

Hopes this helps somone on the fence between the two cooling solutions, thank you to those who read this.

I did run into an issue on my Z97 motherboard and my KLEVV memory, had to replace it with some spare GSKILL I'm lucky I still had.

Yeah, didn't bother looking for a qure but it was distracting to say the least. Though I'm hyper sensitive to vibration.

Are you sure that the vibration was from the cooler? It should be minimal if properly mounted and negligible compared to any hdd vibration.

Positive. Not only is it only there with the DRP4 installed, it followed the fan speed of the DRP4.

 

Properly installed. Though I have a glass desk and the cooler is basically a large tuning fork. On a wood or desk made from another material not sure if you'd feel it.
